Hyundai India & TVS Motor Likely In Talks To Gear Up To Develop Electric Three-Wheeler; Reports

Hyundai India is reportedly in discussions with TVS Motor to co-develop an electric three-wheeler, according to a report by Autocar Professional. This collaboration is seen as Hyundai's strategic move to penetrate India's last-mile mobility market while aligning with its global push toward zero-emission vehicles.

According to a Moneycontrol report, TVS Motor will take on the responsibility of manufacturing the electric three-wheeler locally under a contract manufacturing agreement, while Hyundai will spearhead the vehicle's design and engineering. This partnership could see Hyundai leveraging its micro-mobility vehicle architecture, similar to TVS's access to BMW's architecture through its collaboration with the German automaker.

The entry of Hyundai into this segment comes at a time when the market for electric three-wheelers in India is heating up. By combining Hyundai's engineering expertise with TVS's manufacturing prowess, the collaboration aims to deliver electric vehicles.

Hyundai's EV Aspirations
Hyundai is no stranger to the EV market, with its existing lineup featuring models like the Creta EV and other electric vehicles. The company's plans extend beyond vehicles, as it is also expected to introduce its Shucle platform in India.

Shucle, a demand-responsive ride-pooling service launched in South Korea in 2021, was developed by Hyundai Motor Group's AI research lab. The app-based platform uses advanced AI algorithms to provide flexible routing based on real-time demand, addressing local transportation challenges. The name "Shucle" merges "Shuttle" and "Circle." Hyundai's potential launch of Shucle in India aligns perfectly with its last-mile mobility goals.

TVS's Parallel Plans
TVS Motor, a key player in India's two-wheeler market, is preparing to launch its own electric three-wheeler by 2025.

TVS's focus on local manufacturing and its access to global engineering expertise through partnerships like BMW adds credibility to its EV ambitions. A collaboration with Hyundai could boost its position, allowing both companies to leverage their strengths in creating a product that meets the specific needs of the Indian market.

India's Electric Three-Wheeler Market
India's electric three-wheeler market has been gaining momentum as the country pivots toward sustainable transportation. Major players like Mahindra, which currently holds the largest share in this segment, along with Bajaj Auto, Ola Electric, and Hero MotoCorp, are vying for dominance.

The sector's growth is fueled by increasing urbanization, government incentives for EV adoption, and the demand for efficient last-mile connectivity. Electric three-wheelers, with their cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness, are becoming the preferred choice for intra-city transportation and goods delivery.

Sustainable Mobility
Hyundai's potential partnership with TVS is more than just a business collaboration-it represents a strategic entry into a market with immense potential. The combination of Hyundai's global expertise and TVS's local presence could result in a product that not only meets market demands but also sets a new benchmark for electric mobility in India.
