Hyundai Motor India EV launch planned from Chennai as localisation target rises to 90%
Hyundai Motor India Ltd plans to roll out two new models from its Chennai plant this year, including its first mass-market EV. The carmaker said it aims to make Tamil Nadu its flagship EV hub, lift localisation from 82% to 90% over five to six years, expand fast-charging coverage, and increase purchasing from local suppliers.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd said it will introduce two new models from its Chennai plant in 2026. One of these will be the company’s first mass-market electric vehicle. The automaker said it is also working to build a wider EV ecosystem. This includes steps linked to manufacturing, charging access, and workforce skills.

The company said it is committed to making Tamil Nadu its Flagship EV Hub for India. It also reaffirmed plans to invest more than Rs 26,000 crore in the state. This spending runs from 2023 to 2032. The amount forms part of a wider Rs 45,000 crore investment announcement by Hyundai Motor India.

Tarun Garg, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said, We will roll out two new models from the Chennai facility, including our first mass-market dedicated EV within this year, marking a significant step towards accelerating EV adoption and building a strong EV ecosystem. Alongside advancing EV localisation, we are equally focused on developing a future-ready skilled workforce, enabling talent to support future automotive technologies, he added.
Hyundai Motor India said it is increasing localisation in EV and ICE operations. The company plans to lift localisation from 82 per cent to 90 per cent. It set a timeline of five to six years. Hyundai Motor India said higher local sourcing would support domestic output and lower import dependence.
Hyundai Motor India EV charging network expansion in India
The automaker said it is prepared to expand its reach across major cities and highways. The company linked this plan to the next two to three years. It cited a network of high-capacity chargers placed across urban areas. It also referred to key transit corridors supporting affordable EV plans.
Hyundai Motor India said it aims to raise purchases from Tamil Nadu suppliers by about Rs 4,000 crore. The company expects this to support around 2,000 additional jobs. It placed the timeline at five to six years. The automaker said these steps would add strength to local manufacturing in India.
Hyundai Motor India EV skills programme with Tamil Nadu government
The Tamil Nadu government and Hyundai Motor India Ltd jointly announced a skill development partnership. The goal is to improve the global employability of youth in the state. The initiative is set to begin operations in December 2027. Hyundai Motor India linked the programme to future automotive technologies.
Hyundai Motor India said it has exported over 3.9 million vehicles from Tamil Nadu. These shipments have gone to more than 150 countries. The company also said it has set up Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains. It added it is localising power electronics and other key parts.
