The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has voiced concerns over the planned temporary suspension of cargo operations at Mumbai Airport for infrastructure upgrades. IATA urges Mumbai International Airport Ltd to engage effectively with industry stakeholders to mitigate operational impacts.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has raised concerns about Mumbai airport's decision to halt cargo aircraft operations temporarily. This suspension, set to begin in August 2026, is part of an infrastructure upgrade. IATA approached Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), managed by the Adani group, for clarification in January but has not received a reply.

In a statement, IATA highlighted the importance of MIAL engaging effectively with industry stakeholders to address operational impacts, especially concerning cargo. The association also requested MIAL to adhere to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's guidelines and the Worldwide Airport Slot Boards' best practices.
Impact on Cargo Operations
MIAL's decision follows a letter sent to airlines on February 9, reiterating plans to suspend freight operations during taxiway construction. The airport operator had informed airlines last December about the planned shutdown from August 2026 to May 31, 2027. This closure is necessary for reconstructing an apron used by cargo aircraft.
The suspension is due to safety and capacity issues arising from simultaneous taxiway construction near active airside areas. Mixed passenger and freighter movements under constrained conditions increase safety risks and hinder maintaining acceptable operation timelines during peak hours.
Infrastructure Enhancements
Mumbai airport's development programme includes critical airside and landside infrastructure improvements. These enhancements aim to support future operational growth and involve rehabilitating key airside pavements, optimising aircraft movement areas, and redeveloping cargo-adjacent facilities. Some parts of the existing cargo terminal will be demolished as part of this plan.
MIAL stated that after evaluating all potential alternatives, they regretfully decided that dedicated freight aircraft operations must be suspended during the upgrade period from August 2026 through May 31, 2027. This decision was made due to operational constraints and safety considerations.
Continued Use of Apron G
Despite these changes, MIAL confirmed that Apron G remains suitable for operational use. It has an estimated service life of four years, subject to routine inspection, maintenance, and engineering oversight. The pavement condition review supports its continued use under standard airside pavement management practices.
IATA's concerns highlight the need for effective communication between MIAL and industry stakeholders. Ensuring compliance with guidelines and best practices is crucial for minimising disruptions during this significant infrastructure upgrade at Mumbai airport.
