IIT Admission CBSE Marks Relaxation: Can Class 12 Students Below 75% Still Get an IIT Seat After JEE Advanced?

Students who qualified for JEE Advanced 2026 but fell short of the mandatory Class 12 marks requirement have received a major relief from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. The institute has allowed such candidates to participate in the IIT admission and counselling process while awaiting the result of board result re-evaluation.

IIT Admission CBSE Marks Relaxation for Class 12 JEE Advanced Aspirants: Here's What Has Changed

The decision comes amid widespread concerns raised by students and parents following the declaration of Class 12 board examination results, particularly those of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Many students who qualified in JEE Advanced have sought re-evaluation or verification of their marks, arguing that their scores were lower than expected.

IIT Admission Eligibility: 75% for General Category, 65% for Reserved Categories

Under the existing admission rules, candidates seeking admission to the IITs must secure at least 75% marks in Class 12 examinations if they belong to the General, OBC-NCL or EWS categories. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 65%.

Previously, students who failed to meet these criteria faced uncertainty regarding their eligibility for IIT admissions, even if they had successfully cleared JEE Advanced.

JoSAA Counselling Opened for Candidates Awaiting Revised Class 12 Results

IIT Roorkee has now introduced a temporary relaxation in the admission process. Candidates whose current board examination scores fall below the prescribed eligibility threshold will be allowed to participate in JoSAA counselling and fill their preferred choices for IIT admissions. Seat allocation will also be carried out based on their JEE Advanced rank.

However, such candidates must submit a revised Class 12 marksheet meeting the required eligibility criteria by July 15, 2026. Once the updated scorecard is received and verified, the candidate will be eligible to retain the seat allotted during the counselling process.

The move is particularly significant because it provides relief to students whose board examination marks may increase after re-evaluation, rechecking or other correction processes. Without this relaxation, many candidates risked missing admission opportunities despite having qualified for JEE Advanced.

The issue gained prominence after board examination results released in May triggered dissatisfaction among a large number of students and parents. Many candidates who cleared JEE Advanced but fell short of the 75% eligibility requirement applied for re-evaluation, hoping their revised scores would qualify them for IIT admissions.

IIT Roorkee had earlier indicated that relaxing the eligibility criteria itself would not be feasible, noting that JEE Advanced candidates come from 36 different education boards across the country and that any change in eligibility norms for one board could create fairness concerns.

Instead of lowering the eligibility requirement, the institute has now provided a procedural window that allows affected candidates to continue participating in the admission process while awaiting the outcome of their score revisions.

IIT Roorkee Gives Students Time Until July 15 to Meet Eligibility Norms

Students who currently do not meet the required Class 12 percentage can proceed with counselling and choice filling as per the admission schedule. If their revised board results subsequently meet the prescribed criteria, they must submit the updated scorecard to IIT Roorkee by July 15, 2026.

The institute will then confirm admission against the seat allocated to them after the completion of the counselling rounds.
