IIT Placement Blues: Undergraduates Feel Pressure As Recruiters Shrink Offers Amid Economic Uncertainty

The halls of one of India's most prestigious institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, are buzzing with a sense of uncertainty and disappointment as the placement season for the academic year 2023-24 draws to a close. Despite the formidable reputation of these institutions, the job market has proven challenging for many students, leaving them dealing with the harsh realities of the economic landscape.

Amidst the sea of applicants vying for coveted positions, one undergraduate student from IIT Delhi, who chose to remain anonymous, spoke candidly to TOI about the mounting pressure and disillusionment felt by students during this year's placement season. After failing to secure a job through the traditional on-campus route, the student resorted to reaching out to over 50 recruiters on LinkedIn, only to face the same outcome. Describing the situation as "lacklustre", the student highlighted the pervasive sense of anxiety and uncertainty prevailing among peers.

IIT Placement

The placement process at IIT Delhi typically unfolds in three phases, with the initial two phases occurring in December and February, followed by the final phase in May. However, despite rigorous preparation and anticipation, many students have found themselves at a crossroads, exploring alternative avenues for employment. Some have turned to networking platforms like LinkedIn, while others seek recommendations from peers and seniors or contemplate further qualifications to bolster their credentials.

Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, shed light on the challenges of off-campus placements, expressing concern over the dissatisfaction among students who did secure on-campus offers regarding the offered salary packages. Singh described the situation as "appalling".

Anticipating a difficult year for placements, students had geared up for the rigorous selection process, which spans approximately 15 days. However, despite their best efforts, the number of job offers fell short of expectations. Companies, it seems, have become more discerning, seeking candidates with specialized expertise, leaving many qualified applicants on the sidelines.

An IIT Delhi official, speaking to TOI, underscored the institute's efforts to facilitate the hiring process, including alumni interactions, career fairs, and networking opportunities with industry leaders. However, the official acknowledged the challenges posed by external factors such as fears of recession, which have deterred some tech companies from participating in the placement season.

This sentiment was echoed by an MTech student, who attributed the reduced recruitment to overhiring during the pandemic, further exacerbating the job market's competitiveness. Even officials at IIT Delhi had anticipated a tough year for placements, bracing themselves for the challenges ahead.

Reflecting on the initial phase of the placement season, which saw approximately 1,050 job offers, including pre-placement offers (PPOs), extended to over 1,000 students, the institute had initially appeared optimistic. Moreover, over 50 international offers, including PPOs, were secured by students from prestigious organizations across various regions, adding to the allure of on-campus placements.

Among the prominent recruiters during this phase were industry giants such as Air India, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Goldman Sachs, Bajaj Auto, and Ola Electric, underscoring the prestige associated with securing placements at IIT Delhi.
