IMD Big Weather Alert for India: Monsoon to Hit Kerala In 2 Days Heavy Rain, Flood Risk & Orange Alert Issued

The India Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert as the long awaited southwest monsoon is going to arrive in Kerala within the next two days.

After missing its usual June 1 onset date, the Kerala monsoon is now expected to make landfall around June 4, bringing along heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several parts of the country.

Weather Alert

Millions of people are waiting for the Monsoon arrival to get some relief from summer heat and prepare for the start of the crucial four-month rainy season.

Southwest Monsoon Likely to Reach Kerala on June 4

According to the IMD, atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala. As quoted by ANI, IMD scientist Neetha K Gopal said "the department expects to officially declare the monsoon's arrival on June 4 if current weather patterns continue."

The weather agency has also indicated that the monsoon is likely to advance further into the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days.

The southwest monsoon is a very important weather system for India, supplying nearly 70% of the country's annual rainfall and supporting agriculture, reservoirs, hydropower generation and drinking water supplies.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Issued Across Kerala

As monsoon conditions are prevailing, the IMD has placed several districts in Kerala under Orange and Yellow alerts due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Orange alerts have been issued for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts for Wednesday and Thursday. Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode are also expected to experience intense rainfall on Thursday.

Weather officials have warned that some areas could receive between 11 cm and 20 cm of rainfall over a short period. Such intense rainfall may lead to waterlogging in cities, flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in vulnerable hilly regions.

Authorities have advised residents in high-risk zones to remain alert and follow local administration guidelines.

Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain to Impact Several States

The IMD has forecast active pre-monsoon weather conditions across large parts of India over the next several days. Thunderstorms along with lightning, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall are expected across multiple regions.

States likely to experience thunderstorm activity include Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and several northeastern states.

Why Is the Monsoon Delayed This Year?

The IMD had earlier projected the onset of the monsoon around May 26, with an error margin of four days. However, the monsoon failed to arrive within that forecast window.

Meteorologists have pointed to evolving El Nino-related atmospheric conditions and changes in wind patterns as possible reasons behind the delay. Such weather phenomena can influence monsoon progression, rainfall intensity and regional distribution across the country.
