IMD Issues Heatwave Warning: India To Experience Scorching Temperature In March

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a serious heatwave warning saying that March 2025 could be one of the hottest months ever recorded. The heatwave season will probably begin earlier than expected this year and experts urge people to take precautions as the rising temperatures, extreme weather conditions could have a major impact on agriculture, health, and daily life.

IMD Predicts Unprecedented Heatwave in March 2025

According to IMD officials, temperatures in March are likely to stay above normal in most parts of India. The early summer heat is expected to intensify in the second half of March, with some regions likely to witness temperatures soaring above 40°C, as per the Reuters report.

The most affected area would be the North Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, which are set to experience extreme heatwave conditions.

The Central Indian states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra could see temperatures rising 5-6°C above normal.

In the west, Gujarat and Rajasthan may hit record-high temperatures.
However, in the south, India, which is comparatively better in terms of temperature, has already seen yellow alerts issued due to early heatwaves in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

This unusually hot March is a direct result of climate change, El Niño effects, and global warming, pushing temperatures beyond normal seasonal variations.

Severe Impact on Agriculture: Wheat Crop at Risk

A major concern due to the rising March temperatures is the impact on agriculture, particularly wheat crops. India, one of the largest wheat producers in the world, has already been struggling with weather-related losses in recent years.

Since wheat crops require cooler temperatures in March to grow properly, a sudden heatwave at this stage can damage the crops, which will eventually lead to lower production and higher wheat prices.

Apart from wheat, rapeseed, chickpeas, and vegetables could also suffer due to the hotter-than-usual temperatures. With food inflation already a concern, extreme weather conditions in March could put further pressure on prices and supply chains.

How to Stay Safe During the Heatwave in India

The upcoming March heatwaves could be intense and lead to heat-related illnesses like heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion. Here's how you can stay safe:

Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated throughout the day will prevent dehydration.
It is also advised to avoid direct sunlight and try to stay indoors between 12 PM and 4 PM, when the heat is at its peak.

During the hot and humid summer season, it is best to wear light, loose clothing. Opt for cotton clothes to keep your body cool.

Apply sunscreen and carry sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays when stepping outdoors.

Use curtains, fans, and ACs to maintain indoor temperatures and keep your surroundings cool.

Lastly, stay updated with IMD weather alerts and follow all the safety measures to stay safe from the scorching summer ahead.
