The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major weather alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple states in India over the next seven days. The IMD weather forecast covers Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Northeast India, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, as the Southwest Monsoon 2026 is moving northward across the Indian subcontinent.

Extremely Heavy Rainfall Warning for Karnataka and Kerala on June 8-9

Among the most critical advisories in the latest IMD bulletin is an isolated extremely heavy rainfall warning, exceeding 20 cm, specifically for Karnataka and Kerala on 8th and 9th June 2026. Residents in coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts, and those across Kerala's districts including Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, and Idukki, are urged to remain on high alert.

The IMD has advised all residents in affected regions to stay updated with official weather forecasts and follow advisories issued by local authorities. Low-lying areas, river basins, and hilly terrain are at elevated risk of waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides during this period.

  • west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal
  • Chhattisgarh and Odisha
  • Northeastern states
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim

Given the IMD's 7-day rainfall forecast, residents across the following states should take precautionary measures:

  • Kerala: Risk of flash floods, river overflow, and landslides in Wayanad, Idukki, and Palakkad
  • Karnataka: Coastal and Malnad regions including Coorg (Kodagu), Shivamogga, and Hassan at elevated risk
  • Tamil Nadu: Northeast districts and Nilgiris to experience heavy rain spells
  • Northeast India: Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram to see continuous heavy rainfall
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Risk of landslides and flooding in hilly terrain
