IMD Weather Forecast: Monsoon May Reach Kerala Tomorrow; Yellow Alert in Thiruvananthapuram & Other Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, warning of isolated heavy rainfall across several districts as the Southwest Monsoon is expected to make its onset over the state around May 26. Yellow alerts have been issued in multiple districts till Thursday.

When Will Monsoon Arrive in India? Southwest Monsoon Likely To Hit Kerala Tomorrow

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala toward the later part of its official onset window beginning May 26, with a possible variation of four days. Weather models indicate that monsoon flows near the Kerala coast have weakened slightly, while stronger activity is currently concentrated over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions.

The delayed strengthening of monsoon currents over Sri Lanka has also contributed to expectations of a slightly later onset over Kerala. Sri Lanka's Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon is only "gradually establishing across the island," suggesting that seasonal winds are still building over the region. Usually, the monsoon reaches Sri Lanka before advancing into Kerala.

Meteorologists noted that once monsoon conditions stabilise over Sri Lanka, it can take nearly a week for the system to fully progress towards Kerala. This trend aligns with the IMD's forecast window for the onset of monsoon over the Indian mainland.

Yellow Alert in Kerala: IMD Warns of Heavy Showers in Multiple Districts Till May 28

The weather department has also issued yellow alerts for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam on May 26. The warnings will continue for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha on May 27, while alerts on May 28 have been extended to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts.

The IMD said a yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours, while an orange warning refers to heavy to very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm.

Authorities warned that intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging on roads, traffic congestion and flooding in low-lying areas and near riverbanks. The IMD also cautioned about the possibility of uprooted trees damaging electricity infrastructure, partial damage to houses and huts, and an increased risk of landslides and landslips in hilly regions.
