Income Inequality in India Declines, Challenging K-Shaped Recovery Notion

A report by SBIs Economic Research Department disputes the idea of a K-shaped post-pandemic recovery in India, highlighting a decline in income inequality and increased contributions from lower-income taxpayers.

A recent report by the Economic Research Department of SBI challenges the notion of a K-shaped post-pandemic recovery in India. The report asserts that income inequality has declined, with a significant portion of taxpayers moving to higher income tax brackets. This trend contradicts the widely held belief that the pandemic has exacerbated economic disparities.

Indias Income Inequality Puzzle: Challenging the K-Shaped Narrative

Debunking the K-Shaped Recovery Theory

The K-shaped recovery theory suggests that certain sectors of the economy experience robust growth while others face decline. Some economists, including former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, have applied this concept to India's post-pandemic economic trajectory. However, the SBI research paper dismisses this theory as flawed, biased, and ill-conceived, arguing that it serves the interests of certain quarters uncomfortable with India's remarkable economic rise.

Decline in Income Inequality

The report presents evidence indicating a decline in income inequality in India. The Gini coefficient, a widely used measure of income inequality, has decreased significantly from 0.472 in FY14 to 0.402 in FY22. This reduction implies a more equitable distribution of income among taxable individuals.

Taxpayers' Migration to Higher Income Brackets

A notable finding of the report is that 36.3% of taxpayers have transitioned from lower income to higher income tax brackets. This upward mobility has resulted in an additional 21.3% increase in their income. Conversely, the contribution of the top 2.5% of taxpayers to total income has declined from 2.81% in FY14 to 2.28% in FY21.

Economic Growth and Consumption Patterns

The report highlights several positive economic indicators. For instance, 19.5% of small firms have successfully integrated into larger firms through MSME value chain integration. Additionally, the consumption of the bottom 90% of the population has increased by Rs 8.2 lakh crore post-pandemic. Furthermore, the rise of income in rural areas has led to a shift in consumer preferences, with people opting for four-wheelers instead of two-wheelers.

Women Taxpayers and Food Consumption

The report also sheds light on the growing participation of women in the Indian economy. Approximately 15% of taxpayers in India are women, and two crore family members from semi-urban areas are now consuming food through Zomato.

The SBI research paper presents a compelling case against the K-shaped recovery narrative in India. By analyzing income tax data, the report demonstrates a decline in income inequality and a positive trend of economic mobility. These findings challenge conventional wisdom and provide a more nuanced understanding of India's post-pandemic economic trajectory.
