Income Tax Dept Warns Against Fake Income Tax Refund Messages
On Sunday, the department of income tax warned taxpayers to be alert on any messages they receive in relation to income tax refund as these can be phishing mails.
Also, the department listed out the message that may look to be official and being used may be similar to "Due to Covid-19 outbreak, central govt. has decided to provide tax refund to ALL taxpayers, in order to provide them financial ease during lockdown. Click below to claim your refund. (Phishing web link)".
Further, in an advisory, it said that the department has not come out with any such communication "The department would like to advise tax payers, not to click or entertain any such communication that they receive. Please note, that these are phishing messages and not sent by the income tax department," it said.
Earlier the department said that amid the pandemic it shall issue all the income tax refund worth up to Rs. 5 lakhs on an immediate basis.
Also, after processing most of the refunds, it even asked taxpayers to reply to their e-mails so that they can get taxpayer's confirmation before processing tax refunds.
Tweet by the department said "Taxpayers Beware! Please do not click on any fake link which promises to give refund. These are phishing messages and are not sent by the Income Tax Department".
Notably until April 21, the department processed 14 lakh refunds worth more than Rs. 9000 crore.
