Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla emphasised the need for more research to extend the shelf-life of mushrooms and encouraged greater adoption of mushroom farming. He made these remarks at the 27th National Mushroom Fair organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Directorate of Mushroom Research (ICAR-DMR) in Solan on Tuesday.

Shukla highlighted that mushroom production in India has significantly increased from around one lakh tonnes a decade ago to 3.50 lakh tonnes today. He noted that India now ranks fourth globally in mushroom production, providing substantial income within two to three months.
Enhancing Production and Marketing
The Governor called for scientists, producers, entrepreneurs, and industries to collaborate using modern technologies to boost mushroom production and marketing. He urged the Directorate to disseminate production techniques nationwide through agricultural universities and science centres to ensure better prices for mushroom developers.
He also stressed the importance of focusing on wild mushrooms like Gucchi and Keedajadi, which have high market value. Increasing their productivity could significantly benefit farmers financially.
Promoting Awareness and Training
Shukla advocated for organising fairs, seminars, training sessions, and exhibitions regularly to educate farmers about mushroom farming. These events can help spread knowledge about advanced techniques and market opportunities.
During the event, the Governor presented the Progressive Mushroom Grower Award to several individuals: Anuj Kumar from Assam, Ganesh from Maharashtra, Prakash Chand from Odisha, Rekha Kumari from Bihar, and Shije from Kerala. This recognition aims to motivate other farmers to adopt innovative practices in mushroom cultivation.
Exhibition Inauguration
Earlier in the day, Shukla inaugurated an exhibition showcasing various mushroom production methods by different entrepreneurs. He interacted with them and showed keen interest in their produce, appreciating their efforts in advancing mushroom farming.
The Governor's remarks underscore the potential of mushroom farming as a lucrative agricultural practice. By leveraging modern technologies and increasing awareness, India can further enhance its position in global mushroom production.
