Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, HP Gas Cylinder Rules: LPG Connections To Cut By June? How To Switch To PNG Connection

Amidst the LPG prices hike, the government is also tightening the rules on how much cooking gas can be kept in one household. This is called 'One Household, One Gas Connection.' This is a move to promote piped gas connection (PNG). The government has already announced it will cut the LPG connection of those households that have PNG infrastructure. As per the latest development, the government is already identifying households who are using both LPG and PNG services simultaneously.

Gas Cylinder New Rules:

According to reports, authorities are identifying houses that are using both LPG and PNG connections. This is to ensure genuine usage of cooking gas, to hackle black marketing, and to allocate LPG to those who don't have PNG and are in more need.

In March 2026, as per the circular, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued new rules for gas cylinder connections. One of them included that any person who has a piped natural gas (PNG) connection and also a domestic LPG connection shall retain from domestic LPG connection or apply for LPG refills from any government-backed oil marketing companies or through any distributors.

Simply put, if you have a PNG connection, you cannot apply for new LPG or apply for a refill of LPG.

In a latest update on May 4th, the ministry said city gas distribution companies have been advised to prioritize PNG connections for commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants and canteens across all their GAs to address concerns regarding the availability of commercial LPG.

These companies are IGL, MGL, GAIL Gas and BPCL. Further, the ministry has asked States/UTs and Central Ministries to expedite approvals required for expansion of CGD networks.

It needs to be noted that Indian OMCs like HPCL, Indian Oil and HPCL decide the prices of LPG cylinders for domestic commercial use. They also decide the prices of industrial gas cylinders as well. The most popular LPG cylinder of Indian Oil is Indane Gas, while BPCL sells LPG as Bharat Gas and last but not least, HP Gas is sold by HPCL.

LPG Gas Connection To Be Cut By June 30, 2026?

Another big move is the removal of the LPG gas connection by the end of June 2026. The government has imposed the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution (Through Laying, Building, Operation and Expansion of Pipelines and Other Facilities) Order, 2026.

Under this new order, the government said that the LPG supply shall cease if a household does not switch to PNG despite the availability. This order was announced in March and the timeline to switch to PNG completely was given till 90 DAYS, which ends in June.

The ministry said that the order provides a streamlined and time-bound framework for laying and expanding pipelines across the country, addressing delays in approvals and access to land, and enabling faster development of natural gas infrastructure, including in residential areas. It is expected to accelerate PNG network growth, enhance last-mile connectivity, and support the transition to cleaner fuels, thereby strengthening energy security and advancing India's gas-based economy.

Accordingly, PNGRB has directed CGD entities to expedite D-PNG connections. Also, the National PNG Drive 2.0 has been extended till June 30, 2026, to sustain momentum in PNG expansion.
