Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas Cylinders New Connection Banned? 5 Kg, 10 Kg LPG Or PNG, What Are Alternatives?

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) are likely not issuing any new LPG gas cylinder connections to Indian households since the US-Iran conflict intensified in the first quarter of 2026. It has been nearly 7 months, and citizens are not able to apply for new 14.2 Kg domestic gas cylinders due to supply disruption in LPG through the Strait of Hormuz. The situation in the Middle East continues to be dire, and global transportation at Hormuz remains fragile. As of now, there are no new updates regarding when new LPG connections will be processed. Amidst this, here are some of the alternatives for cooking gas.

Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas New LPG Connections Banned

As per reports, applying for new LPG connections in several states like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai is banned for 14.2 kg domestic cylinders since mid-March 2026.

Since the West Asia war began in late February, global oil and gas supply has taken a huge hit at Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint that holds 20% of transportation economically. Last month, reports said that Indian refiners are ramping up productions for LPG, which has averaged to 44,000 tons daily, which is close to 20% more than the average production in August.

Following the war, a host of measures were declared by the OMCs, such as "One Household, One Cooking Gas", a ban on PNG users from applying for LPG cylinders or new LPG connections, and rules regarding refills, booking, subsidies, surrendering, switching, and e-KYC have also been revised. But another outcome has also emerged, and that is the ban on new LPG connections for domestic cylinders.

Citizens await clarity and relief in new LPG connections. While the Oil Ministry has not given any new updates on when new LPG connections will be allowed, there are alternatives available for cooking gas. These are 5 Kg and 10 Kg LPG cylinders along with PNG.

5 Kg Gas Cylinder

The 5Kg gas cylinder are basically mini or chottu cooking gas that are easily available in the market. These are Indane Chhotu, or Bharat Gas Mini or HP Gas Appu, and citizens can buy them at any LPG distributor. These cylinders are majorly meant for migrants, workers, students, and families who do not have fixed residency or address proof.

5 Kg cylinders of free-trade LPG are available without the need for proof of address or a lengthy application process. Customers do not require submitting address proofs or security deposits to buy 5Kg cylinders. They also do not need to submit documents like Aadhaar card, PAN cards, and voter IDs. The 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder can be refilled as many times in the year. The time taken to refill can be even less than 10 minutes.

10 Kg Gas Cylinders

Recently, OMCs have pushed for 10Kg gas cylinder through quick-service platforms like Swiggy's Instamart. Indian Oil launchedIndane XTRALITE NOW which is lightweight and completely a Free Trade LPG (FTL) product, without domestic LPG subsidy. XTRALITE is priced at Rs 4,853 and the refill price is at Rs 1,667.

Meanwhile, HPCL launched HP Navya which is available across more than 100 cities. For this cylinder, new connections can be requested through the HP PAY app. Also, applicable price is shown during enrolment.

Also. BPCL offers Bharatgas Lite ZIP which has been developed for customers who value convenience, speed and modern service standards. Bharatgas Lite offers instant new connection, enabling customers to obtain a new LPG connection quickly through a simplified onboarding process. Additionally, Bharatgas Lite is part of the OMC's express delivery, ensuring faster delivery of LPG cylinders for an enhanced customer experience.

3. PNG Connection

The city-gas distribution companies and OMCs have been expanding connections to piped natural gas (PNG) at full swing.

To get a PNG connection, first you need to meet the eligibility criteria. The first and foremost is to check whether your society or area has PNG infrastructure, because this is the biggest priority. If they do, you can easily apply for a new PNG connection at the Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL websites or visit the LPG distributor for switching to PNG. You will be required to pay connection charges if required, along with surrendering your LPG connection and submitting necessary documents for new PNG connections.

For PNG, you will be required to submit documents like transfer and subscription vouchers of LPG, consumer records, security deposit receipts, address update details, and other identity proofs like Aadhaar card, Passport, electricity bill or driving license or PAN card and voter id.

Notably, once you switch to PNG connection, as per the government's rule, you are required to terminate your existing LPG connection within 30 days time span. There is one relief for existing LPG users, if you relocate from one PNG-based area to another, you cannot use this LPG transfer voucher. The rule specifically mentions the transfer voucher to return back to LPG connections is when you move to non-PNG areas.

Other alternatives are induction and kersone.
