India AI governance: MeitY sets up Technology and Policy Expert Committee for AIGEG
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formed the Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) to advise the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG). Chaired by the MeitY Secretary, the committee will provide technical, policy, and strategic input on regulatory design and India’s engagement on AI governance in global forums.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has set up a new committee to advise the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG). The body is meant to add technical, policy and strategy support for AI-related decisions. An official release said the panel will help shape policy design and regulatory steps. It will also guide India’s role in AI governance at global forums.

MeitY said this arrangement sits within India’s new AI governance structure. Under this model, the AIGEG will lead overall strategy and align policy across government. The advisory committee will support that work with specialist inputs. The release said this aims to keep decisions consistent across strategy, technology and policy, as AI systems and risks change.
AI governance: Role of the Technology and Policy Expert Committee
The advisory body is called the Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC). It is chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The committee includes selected members from academic research, the technology industry and digital policy. The release said the group will offer expertise that helps the AIGEG take informed decisions across key AI governance questions.
According to the AI Governance Guidelines, the TPEC must back the AIGEG’s discussions with updated understanding. This includes new technology trends, policy models and regulatory design. It also covers global practices in AI governance. The guidelines add that advice should remain linked to India’s social, economic and strategic context, while weighing international developments.
AI governance: Inputs for policy, regulation and global engagement
The release said the TPEC will translate technical and policy questions into practical guidance. This is intended to help the AIGEG convert complex issues into actionable insights. The committee’s inputs are expected to support policy design and regulatory measures. The work will also inform India’s engagements on AI governance across global forums, as described in the release.
The release said the framework is meant to stay dynamic and adaptive over time. It described an approach designed to be "future-forward\" for AI governance decisions. MeitY said the AIGEG and TPEC will work in tandem within this structure. The AIGEG will coordinate government policy, while the TPEC will provide subject guidance to support those choices.
