AI Revolution Unleashed: India Approves Mega Mission with Rs 10,372 Crore Investment

Encouraging AI Development and Research

The India AI Mission will serve as a catalyst for the AI segment and ongoing research in the country. It will be implemented through the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Digital India Corporation (DIC). The approved corpus will be utilized to build a scalable AI ecosystem in collaboration with public and private sector partners.

Democratizing Technology and Empowering Innovators

Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the mission's transformative potential in democratizing technology. By providing access to supercomputing capacity, including over 10,000 GPUs, the mission will empower innovators, startups, students, and educational institutions to harness the power of AI. This will foster a vibrant AI ecosystem and drive groundbreaking research and development.

Positioning India as a Global AI Leader

Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, highlighted the significance of AI as a kinetic enabler for India's digital economy. He expressed confidence that the India AI Mission will catalyze the country's AI ecosystem and position India as a force shaping the future of AI globally. Chandrasekhar emphasized India's pivotal role in shaping the future of AI, underscoring the commitment of the Modi government to this transformative technology.

Establishing the India AI Innovation Centre

A key component of the India AI Mission is the establishment of the India AI Innovation Centre (IAIC). This leading academic institution will spearhead the development and deployment of foundational models, with a focus on indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific models. Leveraging edge and distributed computing, the IAIC will optimize efficiency and drive innovation in AI.

Financial Support for AI Startups and Industry-led Projects

The mission will provide financial support to budding AI startups, facilitating streamlined access to funding and catalysing their journey from product development to commercialization. Additionally, the mission will allocate funds for industry-led AI projects aimed at fostering social impact, propelling innovation, and encouraging entrepreneurship.

National Data Management Office for Improved Data Quality

To enhance the quality of data and make it readily available for AI development and deployment, the mission will establish a National Data Management Office. This office will coordinate with various government departments and ministries to ensure data integrity and accessibility.

Building a Robust AI Computing Infrastructure

Recognizing the importance of computing infrastructure for AI development, the mission will establish a three-tier compute infrastructure comprising 24,500 GPUs. This infrastructure will be set up at five locations with 3,000 AI Petaflops computing power, offering 15 times more capacity than the current highest capacity installed in India. The mission will also establish an Inference Farm (2,500 AI PF) and Edge Compute (500 AI PF) systems.

Global Investments in AI and India's Position

The article highlights significant investments made by global tech giants in AI research and development. Microsoft's investments in Open AI and IBM's commitment to AI innovation underscore the global race to develop AI capacity. In comparison, India currently lags behind countries like the US and China in terms of computing infrastructure for AI development. However, the India AI Mission aims to bridge this gap and position India as a formidable player in the global AI landscape.

The India AI Mission represents a bold and visionary initiative by the Government of India to harness the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence. With a substantial investment of Rs 10,372 crore over five years, the mission aims to build a robust AI ecosystem, empower innovators, support startups, and establish India as a global leader in AI. By democratizing technology, fostering research, and providing access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure, the India AI Mission will drive innovation, fuel economic growth, and position India at the forefront of the AI revolution.
