India Targets Global Aviation Leadership, Commences Aircraft Production

Union Minister K Rammohan Naidu highlighted the growth potential of India's aviation sector on Wednesday, stating that efforts are underway to transform India into a global aviation hub and initiate aircraft manufacturing within the country.

Indias Aviation Growth Plan

Strategic Investments and Regional Collaboration

Naidu emphasised the importance of strategic investments in infrastructure and collaboration among regional stakeholders to achieve sustainable growth in the aviation sector. He made these remarks at the second Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation held in the national capital.

India's aviation market is one of the fastest-growing globally. The fleet size of domestic carriers has doubled from 400 in 2014 to around 800 now. During the same period, domestic passenger numbers surged from 67 million to 152 million.

Infrastructure, Integration, and Innovation

The minister stressed three key elements for the sector's growth: infrastructure, integration, and innovation. He mentioned that his ministry aims to create a seamless aviation landscape by integrating helicopters and seaplane operations with wide-body aircraft under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN.

The number of operational airports in India has also seen significant growth, increasing from 74 in 2014 to 157 today. The government plans to expand this number further to between 350 and 400 airports by 2047.

Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Services

India is well-positioned to offer cost-effective and high-quality Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services to both domestic and international airlines. Naidu noted that boosting indigenous production capabilities is a priority for the government, which includes starting aircraft manufacturing within the country.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

Acknowledging the aviation industry's contribution to global carbon emissions, Naidu said India is promoting the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The target is to blend 1% SAF with jet fuel by 2027, increasing to 2% by 2028 and 5% by 2030 for all international flights.

Around 250 representatives from 41 countries are participating in the two-day conference that began on Wednesday. Naidu was also elected as the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation.

Efforts are being made to make India a global aviation hub while also focusing on starting aircraft manufacturing domestically. With Asia-Pacific set to lead global aviation growth, strategic investments in infrastructure and regional collaboration are crucial for sustainable development across the sector.

The minister concluded by reiterating his vision of establishing a seamless aviation landscape in India.
