MEA Team Reviews Progress of India-Supported Infrastructure in Maldives

On Thursday, a delegation from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conducted a comprehensive review of several key infrastructure projects in the Maldives, including the significant redevelopment of the Hanimadhoo International Airport. These projects are part of the initiatives under the Indian concessional Line of Credit, a testament to India's commitment to fostering development partnerships with the Maldives. The Development Partnership Administration (DPA) of the MEA, led by Joint Secretary Suja K. Menon, spearheads these efforts under the banner "Strengthening Friendship through Developmental Partnerships."

India Boosts Maldives Infrastructure

India's longstanding relationship with the Maldives has been marked by its support in developing various infrastructure projects across the island nation. The recent visit by the MEA team underscores this enduring partnership. The Indian Mission in Maldives highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) the team's appreciation for the progress observed in projects such as the Hanimadhoo International Airport Redevelopment and water and sanitation initiatives in Baarah and Kelaa islands.

Prior to these site visits, bilateral review meetings were held to discuss the Line of Credit (LOC) projects, ensuring a collaborative approach towards addressing challenges and streamlining implementation for effective outcomes. These meetings saw participation from key stakeholders across ministries, reflecting a unified effort to advance these developmental projects.

The diplomatic engagement between India and the Maldives occurs amidst a backdrop of strategic significance, given the Maldives' proximity to India and its location along vital commercial sea lanes in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). However, recent developments have introduced tensions, notably concerning the stationing of Indian military personnel in the Maldives. President Mohamed Muizzu has requested the withdrawal of all Indian military personnel by May 10, with the first batch having already departed earlier this month.

In a move that underscores shifting dynamics, the Maldives has entered into an agreement with a Chinese company for the maintenance of the Sinamale bridge, a critical infrastructure project initially constructed by another Chinese firm. This agreement was announced amidst increased Chinese activities in the Maldives following President Muizzu's election. The Sinamale bridge, inaugurated in August 2018 and connecting Male with Hulhumale Island, stands as the largest infrastructure project in the Maldives. Funded significantly by China through grants and loans, this project exemplifies Beijing's growing influence in the region.

The series of meetings and site visits by Indian officials highlight not only India's ongoing commitment to developmental partnerships with the Maldives but also reflect broader geopolitical currents shaping South Asia's strategic landscape. As both nations navigate these complex dynamics, their collaborative efforts on infrastructure development remain a focal point of their bilateral relations.
