India Increases Export of Essential Goods to Maldives in Fiscal Year 2025

In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, India has announced the removal of export restrictions on certain commodities to the Maldives for the fiscal year 2024-25. This decision, as per the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), encompasses a variety of essential items including eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, and dal. The exports are facilitated under a bilateral trade agreement between India and the Maldives, ensuring a steady supply of these crucial commodities to the island nation.

India Ups Maldives Export in FY25

The DGFT notification highlighted that these exports to the Maldives would be exempt from any current or future export restrictions or prohibitions. This exemption covers a specified quantity of goods such as 21,513.08 tonnes of potatoes, 35,749.13 tonnes of onions, and over 1 million tonnes each of stone aggregate and river sand among others. This move is aimed at ensuring food security and supporting the construction industry in the Maldives.

Furthermore, CAPEXIL, a body dedicated to promoting the export of chemical and allied products from India, will play a crucial role in overseeing the export of river sand and stone aggregate. It will ensure that suppliers comply with environmental regulations and that sand mining does not occur in prohibited coastal regulation zones.

The Indian High Commissioner took to social media platform X to announce that this initiative is part of a unique bilateral mechanism that has led to an upward revision of quotas for each commodity. This year's approved quantities are reportedly the highest since the inception of this arrangement in 1981.

This announcement comes against the backdrop of strained diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives following President Mohamed Muizzu's demand for the repatriation of Indian military personnel shortly after taking office. The situation was further exacerbated by derogatory comments from Maldivian officials towards India, sparking a #BoycottMaldives campaign that impacted tourism from India to the Maldives.

Despite these tensions, trade between India and the Maldives has flourished, with India emerging as the Maldives' second-largest trade partner in 2022 and the largest in 2023. The trade agreement between the two countries facilitates the export of essential commodities from India to the Maldives, supporting human-centric development in line with India's Neighbourhood First policy.

The bilateral trade volume witnessed a significant increase to USD 973.37 million in 2022-23 from approximately USD 740 million in 2021-22. This growth underscores the deepening economic ties between India and the Maldives, further cemented by this latest initiative to enhance commodity exports under revised quotas.

India's commitment to supporting its neighbour extends beyond diplomatic relations, focusing on tangible support through trade and development assistance. The increase in quotas for essential commodities and construction materials reflects this commitment, aiming to contribute positively to the Maldivian economy and its people's well-being.
