India Has Not Proposed FTA to Maldives; Open to Future Discussions

India has officially clarified its stance regarding the speculation on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Maldives, emphasizing that no formal proposal has been made. However, the nation expressed openness to consider such an agreement should the Maldives show interest. This clarification came from External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during his weekly media briefing. The statement was in response to claims made by Maldivian Minister for Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, suggesting India's initiative towards establishing an FTA beyond the existing South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA).

India-Maldives FTA Talks Open

The dialogue between India and the Maldives has seen its share of complexities, especially with the change in leadership in the Maldives following President Mohamed Muizzu's inauguration last November. Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, had promptly requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the island nation, marking a tense phase in bilateral relations. However, this month witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer's visit to India, marking the first high-level interaction since President Muizzu's office assumption.

During Zameer's visit, discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted a mutual interest in strengthening bilateral ties, focusing on development based on mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity. This engagement underscores the importance of diplomatic dialogue in navigating the complexities of international relations, particularly between close maritime neighbours like India and the Maldives.

The relationship between India and the Maldives is pivotal, not just in terms of regional politics but also concerning economic and security collaborations. The nations have historically shared a bond that has contributed to stability in the Indian Ocean Region. The potential exploration of an FTA could further enhance this partnership, offering new avenues for trade and economic cooperation.

As both countries navigate their diplomatic and economic futures, the emphasis remains on mutual respect, interests, and sensitivity towards each other's national priorities and concerns. The recent developments and clarifications serve as a testament to the ongoing efforts to maintain and strengthen the ties between India and the Maldives amidst evolving regional dynamics.
