India Sets Up PIB Fact Check Unit to Verify Government-Related Online Content

New Delhi, Mar 20 - In a significant move to combat misinformation online, the Centre has officially notified the establishment of a fact check unit under the Press Information Bureau (PIB). This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aims to scrutinize online content related to the government for accuracy. The decision underscores the government's commitment to ensuring the dissemination of factual information concerning its activities and policies.

PIB Fact Check Unit Launched

The notification designates the Fact Check Unit as the central authority for verifying content related to the business of the Central Government. This development follows closely on the heels of the Bombay High Court's decision not to impede the Centre's plans for this unit, a verdict that came after a petition by comedian Kunal Kamra and the Editors Guild of India. The petitioners have since escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, with a hearing anticipated on Thursday.

April last year saw the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology introduce amendments to the Information Technology Rules, 2021, through the 2023 Rules. These amendments empower the Fact Check Unit to identify and flag any misleading or false posts about government business to social media intermediaries. In turn, these platforms are required to remove such content to maintain their legal immunity against third-party content.

Established in November 2019, the Fact Check Unit was conceived as a mechanism to deter the spread of fake news and misinformation. It offers a straightforward channel for individuals to report dubious information related to the Government of India. Tasked with addressing misinformation on government policies, initiatives, and schemes, the unit operates both proactively and reactively, based on complaints received.

By actively monitoring, detecting, and countering disinformation campaigns, this unit plays a crucial role in ensuring that incorrect information about government actions is quickly identified and rectified. This initiative represents a proactive approach by the government to maintain integrity and trust in information concerning its operations.
