India-EU Free Trade Deal Today: All eyes are on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a series of key agreements set to be signed on Tuesday, January 27. Finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations, the landmark India-EU deal is expected to mark a major milestone in strengthening trade, investment, and strategic ties between the two sides.

The deal,once described as the "Mother of All Deals" by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, holds immense significance, particularly at a time when the global geopolitical order is rapidly evolving.

European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa and von der Leyen will co-chair the EU-India summit along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Here are the key outcomes that are expected.

India-EU FTA Deal

In a breakthrough, the India-EU FTA deal is likely to be finalised on Tuesday. Once the negotiations are completed, and the FTA deal is signed, the agreement is expected to go through "legal scrubbing" and "internal consultations", reported Indian Express citing sources. While the India-EU FTA deal is likely to be finalised today, it will take nearly 5-6 months for its operationalisation.

Comprehensive Strategic Agenda for 2026-27

The India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda for 2026-2030, announced in January 2026, sets out a plan to upgrade ties through five core areas covering prosperity and sustainability, technology and innovation, security and defence, connectivity, and people-to-people contacts.

Security and Defence Partnership

India and EU are also expected to announce a defence framework pact and a strategic agenda. The new partnership may include ties related to defence partnership, supply of logistics, etc.

Mobility Framework For Students

The two sides are also expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work out on a plan to facilitate the mobility of Indians to Europe. There are expectations of launching a new cooperation framework on mobility covering students, researcher, seasonal workers, etc.

India-EU Trade Deal Schedule

The official visit on Thursday will follow a tight schedule in Delhi for von der Leyen. The programme will open at 11.10 am with a wreath-laying ceremony at Raj Ghat. A meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House will follow, before joint press statements at 1.15 pm.

Later in the afternoon, von der Leyen will participate in a business-focused event at Bharat Mandapam at 3.05 pm. The schedule then lists a meeting with the Vice President at 4.30 pm, ahead of discussions with the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 6 pm.

Travel plans for the delegation will close the von der Leyen Delhi visit schedule. Von der Leyen will leave Delhi at 9.30 pm on Thursday, after completing official meetings. Costa will depart the national capital on Wednesday, following the conclusion of the visit.
