EV battery recycling: India and EU launch third joint call with EUR 15.2 million funding

India and the European Union have launched a third coordinated call for proposals on EV battery recycling under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council. With EUR 15.2 million in combined funding, the programme supports advanced recycling technologies, safer collection systems, and pilot demonstrations. It also backs a joint India-EU pilot line in India to validate industrial deployment.

India and the European Union launched a third joint call for proposals on Wednesday. The plan supports recycling for electric vehicle batteries. It sits under Working Group 2 of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council. This group deals with green and clean energy technologies. The call also aims to deepen ties between India and the EU.

India-EU EV recycling call

The coordinated call sets aside 15.2 million euro, or about Rs 169 crore. An official said the EU share will come through the Horizon Europe programme. The Ministry of Heavy Industries will back the Indian side. The effort also targets critical raw materials. It supports a shift towards a circular economy.

India-EU EV battery recycling proposals: technology focus

The programme will work on advanced EV battery recycling technologies. It includes high-efficiency recovery of key materials. It also covers safe collection systems with digital tracking. Another part is pilot-scale testing of new recycling methods. These steps aim to prove processes in conditions close to real use.

Plans also include a joint India-EU pilot line in India for EV battery recycling work. The pilot line is meant for real-world checks and later industrial use. It will link researchers, industries, and startups from both sides. The idea is to help move validated methods into wider deployment.

India-EU EV battery recycling proposals: funding and timeline

In a statement, Ajay Kumar Sood, principal scientific adviser to the Indian government, said, "This launch is a pivotal moment in the India-EU strategic partnership. As Indias EV market continues its rapid expansion, creating a robust domestic recycling ecosystem is essential for our resource security and environmental commitments.\"

The deadline to submit EV battery recycling proposals is September 15. The call forms part of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council process. It links funding support with technical goals on recycling. It also keeps attention on supply security for key inputs. Both sides are aligning efforts through this third coordinated round.
