A US Department of Commerce official said foreign direct investment from India to the United States totals about USD 16.4 billion, supporting roughly 70,800 jobs. Speaking at a CII reception alongside the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Maryland, he also cited about USD 330 million in research and development spending and USD 1.5 billion in exports.
Indian companies held about USD 16.4 billion in foreign direct investment stock in the United States, a senior US official said. The investment supported about 70,800 jobs, according to the official. The figures were shared at a CII India Reception alongside the SelectUSA Investment Summit at National Harbour in Maryland on Monday evening.

US Deputy Undersecretary Policy and International Trade Administration at the Department of Commerce Brandon Remington also cited research and development activity by Indian firms. Remington said Indian companies spent hundreds of millions of dollars on R&D in America. Remington did not specify the period covered by the cumulative data.

Remington said: "We are pleased to welcome your investment from India. According to available cumulative data, the total stock of foreign direct investment from India to the United States was approximately USD 16.4 billion, which supported approximately 70,800 jobs, USD 313 million in research and development spending and USD 1.5 billion worth of exports,\" Remington said, without any reference to the period under review.
In another figure shared at the reception, Remington said Indian companies spent USD 330 million on research and development in the US. The comments came during the CII event held on the sidelines of the SelectUSA Investment Summit. The summit was hosted at National Harbour in Maryland.

Nearly a dozen Indian companies were set to announce fresh investments at the SelectUSA Investment Summit on Tuesday. Last week, Indias Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd announced a USD 12 billion deal. The deal aimed to acquire New Jersey-based Organon & Co, according to the report.

A CII report released in 2023 placed Indian investment in the US at about USD 40 billion. The report said this activity created 4.25 lakh jobs. In the Indian Roots, American Soil report, CII also said Indian firms invested USD one billion in US R&D projects.
The same CII report said Indian companies also contributed USD 195 million to corporate social responsibility projects. It also listed the top states by reported Indian-company FDI. Texas recorded USD 9.8 billion, Georgia USD 7.5 billion, and New Jersey USD 4.2 billion.
Several US leaders attended the CII India reception at National Harbour, organisers said. The attendees included Delaware Governor Matt Meyer and Guam Governor Loun Leon Guerrero. Maryland Lt Governor Aruna Miller also joined, along with other US officials and business leaders.
Namgya Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission in the Indian Embassy, said Indian firms were adding to the US economy. Khampa cited capital inflows, jobs, and supply chains, plus community contributions. Khampa also said sectors included advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy, including in the Maryland-DC area.
