India to Operate Iran's Chabahar Port for 10 Years, Eyes Investments

Iran is actively seeking investments from India in the Chabahar region following a significant long-term agreement on the operations of Chabahar Port, as revealed by a senior Iranian diplomat. Davoud Rezaei Eskandari, the Acting Consul General of Iran in Mumbai, highlighted the potential of this deal to significantly enhance the bilateral relations between Iran and India. On May 13, India secured a 10-year contract to manage the strategic Iranian port of Chabahar, aiming to bolster trade with Central Asia.

Indias 10-Year Deal on Chabahar Port

The agreement, established between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organisation of Iran, supersedes a preliminary pact from 2016. This initial agreement, which was renewed annually, facilitated India's operations at Shahid Beheshti Terminal within Chabahar Port. "Chabahar Port holds strategic importance for both India and Iran, offering a pivotal point for mutual benefits across various perspectives," Eskandari stated.

Eskandari expressed optimism about attracting Indian investment in the Chabahar area, emphasizing the mutual benefits derived from India's advanced maritime technology and its capabilities in port management. He underscored the new momentum in Iran-India relations, suggesting that the Chabahar Port contract could mark a historical milestone in their contemporary interactions.

Highlighting the geopolitical significance of the North-South corridor, initiated by India, Iran, and Russia, Eskandari pointed out its role in providing direct access to Afghanistan and landlocked Central Asian countries. The corridor, bypassing Pakistan, offers a secure and efficient route for Indian goods to reach these regions via road and rail links.

"This corridor not only serves as the most feasible connection to these countries but also ensures safety and security amidst global trade challenges," he added. Eskandari also touched upon the broader implications of diversifying supply chains, indicating that reliance on a single route poses economic and strategic risks. The development and management of Chabahar Port by India could thus serve as a crucial access point for South Asian countries and ASEAN members to Russian markets.

In essence, the Chabahar Port deal is not merely a bilateral achievement between Iran and India but a strategic asset with the potential to reshape regional trade dynamics. As both nations look forward to reaping the benefits of this partnership, the agreement stands as a testament to their commitment towards fostering economic cooperation and connectivity.
