India has a two-to-three-year window to capitalize on global de-risking from China. NITI Aayog CEO Subrahmanyam emphasizes the need for attractive policies to attract businesses and highlights Indias potential in manufacturing.
India has a unique opportunity to attract businesses shifting out of China due to geopolitical tensions and demographic challenges. NITI Aayog CEO Subrahmanyam emphasized the need for swift action and attractive policies to make India an appealing destination for these businesses.
India's Sweet Spot and Limited Window
Subrahmanyam highlighted India's favorable position due to geopolitical dynamics and its young working-age population. He stressed that India has a two-to-three-year window to capitalize on this opportunity as supply chains are being restructured and companies seek new geographies.
Challenges and Competition
Subrahmanyam acknowledged that India faces competition from countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, and Bangladesh in attracting businesses from China. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive set of policies and programs to make doing business in India more attractive and easier.
Addressing Customs Rules and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
Subrahmanyam pointed out the need to revise customs rules to allow the import of used goods when companies shift their factories to India. He also stressed the importance of adapting to the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) as major markets move towards carbon taxation.
Manufacturing Exports and Services Catch-Up
While manufacturing exports from India currently surpass services exports, Subrahmanyam predicted that services exports will eventually catch up. He highlighted the critical question of where the manufacturing boom will originate and its anticipated timeframe in achieving India's USD 2 trillion export target by 2030.
India stands at a pivotal moment to capitalize on the global de-risking from China. By implementing proactive policies, addressing challenges, and adapting to changing market dynamics, India can attract businesses, boost manufacturing, and achieve its export targets. The government and businesses must collaborate to seize this opportunity and secure India's position as a global manufacturing hub.
