Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that India could soon surpass the US as the largest market for GPT-5 due to its rapid AI adoption. The new model aims to enhance accessibility and collaboration with local partners.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced that India might soon surpass the United States as the company's largest market. This statement came as OpenAI introduced its latest model, GPT-5, which will be freely accessible to all users. Altman highlighted India's rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by both individuals and businesses.

Altman expressed enthusiasm about India's growth, noting, "India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. Its incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable." He also mentioned plans to visit India in September to further explore opportunities.
GPT-5 Model Launch
OpenAI launched GPT-5 on Thursday, describing it as their most advanced model for coding and agentic tasks. The model is available in three sizes: gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano. This variety allows developers to balance performance, cost, and latency according to their needs.
GPT-5 represents a significant upgrade from GPT-4 and marks a substantial step toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Altman stated, "GPT-5 is really the first time that I think one of our mainline models has felt like you can ask a legitimate expert, like a PhD-level expert, anything... We wanted to simplify it and make it accessible."
Focus on Indian Languages
The new model enhances multilingual understanding across more than 12 Indian languages. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, emphasized this improvement: "GPT-5 significantly improves multilingual understanding across over 12 Indian languages, including regional languages. So that's really exciting because as Sam mentioned, India is a priority market for us."
The rollout of GPT-5 began on August 7 for free users as well as Plus and Pro subscribers. Enterprise and Education users were granted access a week later. This staggered release aims to ensure smooth integration across different user groups.
OpenAI is committed to collaborating with local partners in India to make AI more affordable and effective for the country's population. Altman noted the importance of these partnerships in adapting AI solutions specifically for Indian needs.
The introduction of GPT-5 highlights OpenAI's dedication to advancing AI technology while making it accessible globally. By focusing on multilingual capabilities and affordability, OpenAI aims to cater to diverse markets like India effectively.
