India Post Update: How DHRUVA Will Turn Your Postal Address Into a Smart Email-Style ID

India Post Update: The conventional method to write postal address with the mandatory pincode, nearest landmark, etc will soon be replaced with a smarter 10-digit alphanumeric pin code based on location coordinates. The Department of Posts is planning to implement a framework called Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address (DHRUVA).

The Department, in May, released DHRUVA, a comprehensive policy document to lay out the framework for a national Digital Address Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Additionally, the launch of Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) will allow a sharing a logical location of addresses through a naming pattern with directional properties and is designed to be freely accessible in the public domain.

These new services will not only update India Post's functionality but will also allow a range of private gig platforms, e-commerce players like Amazon and Uber, to identify a location with a label. This will also eliminate the need to fill out an address. Here are all the details about India Post's DHRUVA.

What is India Post's DHRUVA?

DHRUVA is a standardised addressing system. Unlike regular postal address that rely on postal codes, details of nearest locality, area, district, etc, DHRUVA is supposed to identify location based on coordinates. As per PIB, it plans to bring a geocoded digital addressing system to support secure, consent-based, and seamless sharing of address location.

The system will use a concept of Address-as-a-Service (AaaS), which is linked to services associated with address data management to support secure and efficient interactions between users, government entities, and private sector organisations.

Transforming Addresses Into Email ID-Like Labels

The Department of Posts in May proposed a framework called Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address, or DHRUVA, which would allow for the standardisation and sharing of physical addresses through "labels" that resemble email addresses.

The DHRUVA plan outlines several distinct roles. Address Service Providers would create and manage proxy addresses, such as amit@dhruva. Address Validation Agencies would verify that each address actually exists and is correctly described. Address Information Agents would run consent dashboards, where users see which platforms are requesting address access and can approve, pause, or revoke sharing.

How Will India Post's DHRUVA Work?

It will function based on a consent-based data sharing, where people can tokenise their addresses (like UPI addresses) and even update the information whenever they shift to another location, according to a report by The Hindu daily.

The framework is also designed to ease routine life changes. When someone shifts home, the same DHRUVA "label" could redirect grocery orders, courier parcels and government correspondence to the new address after a single update. The Department adds that intermediaries could use these digital addresses to show nearby doorstep services, improving "service discovery," for residents in cities and smaller towns.
