Ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Trump, Indian Prime Minister Modi is set to announce tariff reductions to enhance U.S. exports. The focus will be on trade, defence, and technology amid rising global trade tensions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to reduce tariffs further before meeting U.S. President Donald Trump. This move aims to increase American exports to India and prevent a trade conflict, according to government officials. Modi's visit to the U.S. on Wednesday and Thursday coincides with Trump's intention to impose reciprocal tariffs on several countries, aiming to reshape global trade in favour of the United States.

India is contemplating tariff cuts in over a dozen sectors, including electronics, medical equipment, and some chemicals, to boost U.S. exports. These reductions align with India's domestic production strategies, as stated by three government officials who requested anonymity. The officials mentioned that concessions might be offered for items primarily sourced from the U.S., like dish antennas and wood pulp.
Focus on Trade and Defence
The upcoming meeting between Modi and Trump will concentrate on trade, defence cooperation, and technology. However, it has been overshadowed by recent deportations of Indians from the U.S. One official noted that the meeting would provide political direction for bilateral ties, with detailed tariff discussions following the trip.
Despite Trump's criticism of India's trade practices, he has praised Modi as "fantastic." The U.S. remains India's largest trading partner, with two-way trade exceeding $118 billion in 2023/24. India posted a surplus of $32 billion during this period. Trade relations between the two nations have steadily grown over the past decade.
Potential Mini Trade Deal
Modi is expected to discuss tariffs with Trump next week, and India is open to exploring a possible mini trade deal. An official expressed hope that this early visit could prevent a "trade war-like situation" similar to what occurred between the U.S. and China when Trump imposed 10% tariffs on Chinese imports.
The Indian government has already reduced average import tariff rates from 13% to 11% on various items in its annual budget and lowered taxes on high-end bikes and luxury cars. Additionally, India is reviewing surcharges on more than 30 items, including luxury cars and solar cells.
Trade Tensions and Tariff Reductions
Trump has previously labelled India as a "very big abuser" in trade matters and urged India to purchase more American-made security equipment for fairer bilateral trade relations. The discussions on tariff concessions follow these criticisms as both nations seek common ground.
The Indian ministries of trade, foreign affairs, and the Prime Minister's Office did not respond to requests for comment sent outside official working days. The officials involved in these discussions are not authorised to speak publicly about them.
The focus remains on avoiding potential conflicts while strengthening economic ties between India and the United States amidst changing global dynamics.
