India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, emphasized the significance of India-Russia relations during his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow. The meeting covered a wide range of topics, including the international situation, contemporary issues, and regional developments.

Discussions on Key Issues

Jaishankar and Lavrov exchanged views on various pressing matters, including the Indo-Pacific region, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the situation in Gaza, developments in Afghanistan and Central Asia, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the G20, and UN-related matters. The discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration and mutual understanding between the two nations.

Bilateral Cooperation and Progress

Jaishankar noted the substantial progress achieved in bilateral economic cooperation, energy trade, connectivity efforts, military-technical cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges. He emphasized the signing of the Protocol on Consultations for the period 2024-28, further strengthening the partnership between India and Russia.

He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the development of this corridor to facilitate transit freight traffic from India, Iran, and Persian Gulf countries to Europe.

Growing Trade and Economic Ties

Jaishankar noted the record-high trade turnover between India and Russia, surpassing $50 billion last year. He emphasized the balanced and sustainable nature of this trade, ensuring fair market access for both countries.

Cooperation in the Russian Far East

The two sides discussed enhancing cooperation in their relationship with the Russian Far East. Jaishankar expressed expectations for a delegation from the Far East to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat meeting in January. Discussions focused on long-term arrangements in trade, energy, fertilizers, and cooking coal, as well as mutual investments and progress on a bilateral investment treaty.

Connectivity and Energy

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of connectivity, both from western India through the International North-South Transport Corridor and from eastern India to Vladivostok via the polar route. He also mentioned the potential for collaboration with Russia to enhance India's polar capabilities.

Civil aviation and tourism were also discussed during the meeting. Jaishankar expressed a desire to increase the number of Russian tourists in India and mentioned the increase in weekly flights from India to Russia. Both sides agreed to explore further expansion in this area.

Jaishankar mentioned the frequent contact between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin, expressing confidence that the two leaders will meet for an annual summit next year. Foreign Minister Lavrov expressed gratitude for India's responsible approach in addressing regional and global issues, focusing on national interests and fair international cooperation.
