In a significant development, India and Russia have signed crucial agreements related to the construction of future power generating units at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, currently on a five-day visit to Russia, announced the signing of these agreements following a comprehensive meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. The agreements encompass nuclear power, medicines, pharmaceutical substances, and medical devices.

Progress in Bilateral Economic Cooperation
During the meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the substantial progress achieved in various sectors of bilateral economic cooperation, including trade, finance, connectivity, energy, civil aviation, and nuclear domains. He emphasized the need to explore new opportunities and make the cooperation more balanced and sustainable across different dimensions.
Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant
The Kudankulam nuclear power plant, built with Russian technical assistance in Tamil Nadu, holds significant importance for India's energy sector. The construction of the plant began in March 2002, and the first power unit has been operating at its full capacity of 1,000 MW since February 2016. The plant is expected to operate at full capacity by 2027.
India-Russia Strategic Partnership
Jaishankar described Russia as a special partner in key areas such as defense, nuclear power, and space. He emphasized that collaborations in these areas are only possible with countries with a high degree of trust. The minister also announced that India and the Eurasian Economic Zone will initiate in-person negotiations on a free trade agreement by the end of January.
Addressing Payment Issues
In response to a question about payment issues between Russia and India, Jaishankar acknowledged the challenges and stated that efforts are being made to find solutions. He encouraged banks to engage with each other and educate businesses about reliable banking channels and safe routes for transactions.
Bilateral, Multilateral, and International Discussions
Jaishankar is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Wednesday to discuss bilateral, multilateral, and international issues. He expressed confidence in the growing strength of the India-Russia relationship and highlighted the increasing Russian focus on Asia, which has contributed to the substantial growth in trade between the two countries in recent years.
Role of the Indian Community
Jaishankar commended the Indian community's contributions to strengthening the collaboration between India and Russia. He urged them to continue playing a vital role in promoting close ties between the civil societies of both nations. He emphasized that an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) will further deepen ties with Russia in a multipolar world.
Russian Industry and Trade Exhibition
Jaishankar also visited the Russian Industry and Trade exhibition with Manturov. He expressed appreciation for the exposition of Russia's contemporary capabilities and saw potential for enhanced collaboration between the two countries.
The signing of agreements related to the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and the ongoing discussions on various aspects of bilateral cooperation underscore the strong ties between India and Russia.
