India Achieves Rs 1.06 Lakh Crore Foreign Exchange Savings Through Enhanced Biofuel Blending
India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, has saved Rs 1.06 lakh crore in foreign exchange over the past decade by incorporating biofuels into petrol, according to Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Speaking at the CII Bioenergy Summit, he highlighted that ethanol blending in petrol has increased from 1.53% in 2014 to 15%. The government aims for a 20% blend by 2025.

Biofuel Impact on Economy and Environment
Between 2014 and August 2024, ethanol blending in petrol saved Rs 1,06,072 crore in foreign exchange. It also reduced CO2 emissions by 544 lakh tonnes and substituted 181 lakh tonnes of crude oil. These achievements underline the environmental and economic benefits of biofuel usage in India.
The government has ambitious plans for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), targeting a 1% blend by 2027 and 2% by 2028. This initiative positions India as a leader in bio-mobility. Bioenergy is set to play a vital role in meeting India's growing energy needs while supporting climate goals and rural development.
Future Growth of Bioenergy Market
The current bioenergy market is valued at USD 44 billion, as per Wood Mackenzie. It is expected to grow to USD 125 billion by 2050. If global net-zero targets are met, this figure could rise to USD 500 billion. This growth potential presents significant opportunities for India.
India possesses over 750 million tonnes of biomass, with about two-thirds used domestically for purposes like cattle feed and compost fertilizer. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that biofuels could grow by 3.5 to 5 times by 2050 due to net-zero targets, offering substantial prospects for India.
India's robust economic growth is expected to drive 25% of global energy demand over the next two decades. Bioenergy will be crucial in meeting this demand while advancing climate goals and rural development. The country's commitment to biofuels reflects its dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
The government's focus on biofuels not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens India's energy security. By reducing reliance on imported oil, India can enhance its economic resilience and contribute to global sustainability efforts through innovative energy solutions.
