India and Spain Forge New Agreements on Infrastructure, Rail Transport, Culture and Tourism
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez met in Vadodara, Gujarat, where they signed several memorandums of understanding (MOUs). The discussions took place at the Laxmi Vilas Palace and covered various topics, including the situation in Ukraine and West Asia. Tanmaya Lal, Secretary West at the Ministry of External Affairs, shared these details.

During their talks, both leaders exchanged views on Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi emphasised India's stance that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He stated, "This is not the time for war; this cannot be resolved on the battleground. It is necessary that direct discussion takes place between both the parties." India also reiterated its commitment to a free and peaceful Indo-Pacific region.
India-Spain Cooperation Agreements
India and Spain signed agreements in key sectors such as infrastructure, railways, culture, and tourism. An MOU on rail transport was established for cooperation in planning and developing railway infrastructure. This includes stations, facilities, and equipment for long-distance passenger and freight networks as well as urban railway systems.
The two countries agreed to celebrate 2026 as the India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI. A cultural exchange programme for 2024-28 was also signed to enhance bilateral exchanges in music, dance, theatre, literature, museums, and festivals.
Customs Cooperation and Consulate Openings
An agreement on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs-related matters was signed. This will facilitate information exchange to prevent and combat customs offences. Additionally, Spain will open a consulate in Bengaluru, Karnataka. India's consulate general in Barcelona became operational in August this year.
The Spanish delegation included two ministers and 15 CEOs from leading companies. The bilateral talks concluded with a banquet lunch hosted by PM Modi at the grand palace.
Inauguration of TASL-Airbus Facility
Earlier in the day, Modi and Sanchez inaugurated the Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL)-Airbus facility in Vadodara. This facility will manufacture C-295 military aircraft in India.
The meeting between India and Spain highlighted their commitment to strengthening ties across various sectors. Both nations aim to foster cooperation that benefits their economies and cultures.
