At the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers meeting in Brazil, India emphasised the importance of supporting small and marginal farmers. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that these farmers cannot tackle climate change, price volatility, and resource scarcity alone. He stressed that global food security goals will remain unmet unless small farmers are protected and empowered.

Chouhan described agriculture as more than just an economic activity; it is a source of livelihood, food, and dignity for millions. He proposed cluster-based farming, farmer producer organisations, cooperative models, and natural farming as effective strategies to empower small farmers and enhance their market access.
Focus on Technological Innovations
India shared its technological advancements at the meeting, including the Digital Agriculture Mission, AgriStack, drone technology, and Climate-Resilient Villages. These innovations have significantly improved service delivery and increased farmer incomes. The emphasis was on how technology can play a crucial role in transforming agriculture.
The BRICS Agriculture Ministers launched the BRICS Land Restoration Partnership to combat land degradation, desertification, and soil fertility loss. This initiative aims to address critical environmental challenges affecting agriculture globally.
Commitment to Fair Agricultural Trade
The meeting highlighted the necessity for fair agricultural trade practices. It stressed controlling global price volatility and ensuring remunerative prices for small farmers. These measures are vital for sustaining the livelihoods of smallholders worldwide.
In their Joint Declaration, BRICS nations pledged to create a global agri-food system that is fair, inclusive, innovative, and sustainable. The focus is on food security, climate adaptation, and empowering women and youth within the agricultural sector.
Invitation for Global Collaboration
Chouhan extended an invitation to BRICS nations to participate in World Food India 2025 and the World Audio-Visual Entertainment Summit 2025. These platforms aim to foster innovation and global collaboration in agriculture and related fields.
The meeting underscored the need for collective efforts to support small farmers in overcoming challenges posed by climate change and market dynamics. By prioritising these farmers in global strategies, sustainable agricultural development can be achieved.
