India has consistently seen itself as a responsible nation, committed to the interests of the Global South, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Wednesday. He emphasised that the welfare of all people globally is a shared responsibility among nations.

The Global South encompasses developing and least developed countries in regions like Africa and Asia. Goyal expressed India's desire to befriend every country, especially the BIMSTEC member states, which represent nearly 22% of the world's population.
India's Commitment to Global Welfare
Goyal made these remarks at the CII's BIMSTEC Business Summit 2024. His comments are particularly relevant given the political unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh. "We are all deeply concerned about the evolving situation in Bangladesh and we wish the people of Bangladesh well. We will all collectively convey our best wishes for a smooth transition and a bright future in the years to come," he said.
BIMSTEC, or the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, includes seven members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. These nations collectively form a significant portion of the global population.
