India Unemployment Rate Falls To 5% In August 2026, 6-Month Low; Rural Jobs Improve, Urban Market Weakens

India's unemployment rate fell to 5 percent in August 2026 from 5.1 percent in July, marking its lowest level in six months. The improvement was mainly driven by rural India, where unemployment declined as more people found work.

The latest data shows that the labour market improved outside cities, while urban employment conditions remained relatively weak. Rural unemployment fell to 4.1 percent in August from 4.5 percent in July. In contrast, urban unemployment edged up to 6.8 percent from 6.7 percent.

Rural Unemployment Falls While Urban Rate Rises

The fall in rural unemployment was seen among both men and women. Rural male unemployment declined to 4.3 percent in August from 4.6 percent in July, while the rate for rural women fell to 3.9 percent from 4.3 percent. The picture was different in cities. Urban male unemployment increased to 6.1 percent from 5.9 percent. Female urban unemployment remained broadly unchanged.

India Unemployment Rate

This means the overall improvement in India's unemployment rate cannot be viewed as a broad recovery across the country. Rural areas accounted for most of the improvement, while urban job markets continued to face pressure.

Another positive sign came from the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), which rose to 55.6 percent in August from 55.4 percent in July. LFPR shows the share of people aged 15 years and above who are either working or looking for work.

Rural LFPR increased to 58.2 percent from 58 percent, while urban LFPR remained unchanged at 50.4 percent. The numbers again show that the improvement was concentrated in rural India.

Female participation also increased. Overall female LFPR rose to 34.8 percent from 34.4 percent in July. Rural female LFPR increased to 39.4 percent from 38.8 percent, while urban female participation remained at around 25.4 percent.

The rise in female participation is important because it means more women were either working or actively looking for jobs. However, the monthly increase alone does not show whether these jobs are permanent, well-paid or full-time.

India WPR Hits 52.8% In August, Highest Since March; Rural Employment Improves

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which measures the share of the population that is employed, also increased in August. Overall WPR rose to 52.8 percent from 52.5 percent in July, its highest level since March 2026. Rural WPR increased to 55.8 percent from 55.4 percent, while urban WPR remained unchanged at 47 percent.

The rural numbers are particularly important. More people entered the labour market, and the share of people actually working also increased. This suggests that the fall in rural unemployment was linked to better employment absorption rather than simply fewer people looking for jobs.

India's Jobs Recovery Remains Uneven

The year-on-year numbers also show a clear difference between rural and urban India. Overall LFPR was 0.6 percentage point higher than in August 2025, while female LFPR increased by 1.1 percentage points.

Rural WPR was also 1.3 percentage points higher than a year earlier at 55.8 percent. However, urban WPR fell to 47 percent from 47.5 percent in August 2025.

The August figures are based on the Periodic Labour Force Survey's monthly estimates under the Current Weekly Status method. Since employment can vary with seasonal and temporary work, monthly changes need to be assessed along with the broader trend.
