India's rural economy heavily relies on veterinary infrastructure and expertise, according to Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, S P Singh Baghel. During a national workshop on World Veterinary Day, Baghel emphasised the crucial role veterinarians play in rural areas. He called for collaboration among veterinary professionals, scientists, and public health experts to promote integrated health strategies.

Focus on Indigenous Breeds and Technology
India is home to over 536 million livestock, the largest population globally. Nearly 70% of rural households depend on these animals for their livelihood. Baghel highlighted the significance of indigenous livestock breeds that are well-suited to local climates and essential for sustainable production. He advocated for advanced reproductive technologies like sex-sorted semen and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to boost productivity.
Digital initiatives such as the National Digital Livestock Mission have been praised by Baghel for their role in disease monitoring. He also stressed India's commitment to the One Health approach, which aims to tackle zoonotic diseases effectively. This approach integrates efforts from various sectors to improve health outcomes.
Addressing Veterinary Shortages
Animal Husbandry Secretary Alka Upadhyaya pointed out the need for a comprehensive reform of India's veterinary ecosystem. Despite technological advancements like IVF and cattle immunisation, there is a significant shortage of veterinary professionals. This gap needs urgent attention to ensure the sector's growth and efficiency.
FAO Assistant Director-General Thanawat Tiensin, speaking virtually from Rome, commended India's contributions to global One Health initiatives. He noted India's recent recognition under the Pandemic Fund for Animal Health Preparedness as a testament to its efforts in this area.
World Veterinary Day Theme
The theme for World Veterinary Day 2025 is "Animal Health Takes a Team." It underscores the importance of collective efforts involving veterinarians, scientists, public health experts, and farmers. This theme highlights the need for teamwork in addressing animal health challenges effectively.
India's focus on enhancing veterinary infrastructure and skills is vital for supporting its rural economy. By leveraging technology and fostering collaboration among experts, India aims to strengthen its position in global animal health initiatives while ensuring sustainable development within its borders.
