Indian Airlines Mull Suspending Israel Flights Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

Amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, Indian airline companies are contemplating the suspension of flight operations to and from Tel Aviv, Israel. The move comes as Iran and its proxies, operating out of Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, launched a barrage of more than 200 projectiles towards Israel on Saturday night.

The onslaught included dozens of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, raising concerns about the safety of air travel in the region.

Sources close to the matter have indicated that a formal announcement regarding the suspension of flight operations to and from Israel is imminent. This decision reflects the growing apprehension within the Indian aviation industry regarding the potential risks associated with operating in an airspace affected by geopolitical conflicts.

Despite the escalating tensions, an Air India flight successfully landed in Tel Aviv yesterday at Tel Aviv International Airport and is scheduled to operate back to India. Currently, two major airlines, El Al and Air India, maintain commercial flights between Israel and India, but the ongoing situation has prompted a reassessment of their operations.

In response to the heightened tensions, Indian airlines have already taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew. Both Air India and Vistara have announced the avoidance of Iranian airspace for their Europe and US operations, opting instead for longer flight paths to minimise exposure to potential risks.

Vistara Airlines issued a statement acknowledging the change in flight paths due to the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel. The statement emphasised the use of contingency routes to ensure operational continuity in such challenging circumstances. However, the adoption of these alternate routes may lead to longer flight times and associated delays for passengers.

"This may result to longer flight times on certain routes and associated delays. The situation is being monitored closely, and further changes will be made if required," a Vistara spokesperson stated, underscoring the airline's commitment to passenger safety amidst geopolitical uncertainties.

Air India, as the largest Indian airline with extensive operations in Europe, the US, and the Middle East, has also been closely monitoring the developing situation in the region. While the airline has not yet announced any specific changes to its flight operations, it remains vigilant and prepared to implement the necessary measures to safeguard its passengers and crew.

As tensions continue to escalate between Iran and Israel, the Indian aviation industry faces the challenge of balancing operational continuity with the imperative of ensuring the safety and security of travelers. The potential suspension of flight operations to Israel, if enacted, would underscore India's commitment to prioritising the well-being of its citizens and maintaining regional stability in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions.
