Indian Army's Pilot Initiative To Recruit Women In Territorial Army

The Indian Army is exploring the inclusion of women in the Territorial Army as a pilot initiative. Initially, recruitment will be limited to select battalions, with potential expansion based on feedback. This move aims to gradually increase women's roles within the force, aligning with the government's focus on 'Nari Shakti' in the armed forces.

Established under the Territorial Army Act on August 18, 1948, and launched by C. Rajagopalachari on October 9, 1949, the Territorial Army serves as a 'citizen soldier's army'. It allows able-bodied Indian citizens, especially those too old for regular army enlistment, to serve in uniform. The current strength is about 50,000 personnel across various units.

Women's Role in Armed Forces

In March 2022, Ajay Bhatt, then Minister of State for Defence, highlighted that women's roles in combat are continuously evolving and regularly reviewed. Women are currently commissioned into ten arms and services within the Indian Army. These include Corps of Engineers, Signals, Air Defence, Service Corps, Ordnance Corps, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Aviation Corps, Intelligence Corps, Judge Advocate General Branch and Education Corps.

The Territorial Army comprises both Departmental and Non-Departmental units. Departmental units include organisations like Railways and ONGC. Non-Departmental units consist of Infantry Battalions (TA), Home and Hearth Battalions, Ecological Battalions affiliated with Infantry Regiments and Engineer Regiments (TA) for Line of Control maintenance.

Historical Engagements

The Territorial Army has been actively involved in several operations over the years. They participated in conflicts during 1962, 1965 and 1971. Additionally, they were part of Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and Operations Rakshak in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. In the northeast region of India, they took part in Operations Rhino and Bajrang.

This initiative to induct women into the Territorial Army reflects a broader commitment to enhancing gender diversity within India's armed forces. By gradually expanding opportunities for women through this pilot project, the Indian Army aims to integrate more women into its ranks while assessing their roles effectively.
