Indian Companies Play Key Role in Bangladesh Nuclear Power Plant Construction

Indian firms are involved in constructing the Rooppur nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, built by Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear corporation. The Paharpur Cooling Towers company is responsible for building all four cooling towers and two pumping stations for the power units, according to a note prepared for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia.

Modi visited Russia to attend the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Vladimir Putin. During his visit, he also toured the Rosatom Pavilion at the All Russian Exhibition Centre, VDNKh. Files released by Rosatom's press service indicate that the Rooppur plant is located 160 km west of Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital.

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Details

The Rooppur plant will feature two power units equipped with VVER-1200 reactors, providing a combined capacity of 2,400 MW. This design has been successfully implemented at Russia's Novovoronezh NPP. The generation III+ plant represents a significant technological advancement and complies fully with international safety standards.

Earlier in April, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev discussed with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the potential construction of two additional power units at the Rooppur site.
