New Delhi, Mar 27 - India's mobile gaming sector is on a rapid ascent, with projections indicating that the annual revenue of the country's gaming industry is set to surge to USD 6 billion by 2028, up from USD 3.1 billion in 2023. This forecast comes from a comprehensive analysis conducted by the Interactive Entertainment and Innovation Council (IEIC) in collaboration with online gaming firm Winzo. The India Gaming Report 2024 highlights a vibrant ecosystem that is expected to see the number of paying gamers expand to 240 million by 2028, a significant increase from the current count of 144 million.

The Indian gaming landscape is robust, housing over 1400 companies and 500 dedicated gaming studios. This burgeoning sector is not just about entertainment; it's a significant economic driver, poised to double its annual revenue within the next five years. The report underscores the pivotal role of mobile gaming, which accounts for 90 per cent of the market, a stark contrast to the US and China, where mobile gaming constitutes 37 per cent and 62 per cent, respectively.
India's global footprint in the gaming world has also seen remarkable growth. From 2019 to 2023, game downloads in India leaped from 5.65 billion to an impressive 9.5 billion, capturing a substantial 16 per cent share of global game downloads. This places India ahead of Brazil and the US, which hold 7.6 per cent and 7.4 per cent market shares respectively.
The demographic makeup of Indian gamers has evolved significantly. Currently, women constitute about 40 per cent of the gaming population, a notable increase from three years ago when only one in five gamers were women. The report also sheds light on age-related preferences within the gaming community; nearly half of all gamers are aged between 18 to 30 years, showing a preference for mid-core and hardcore genres like shooting games. Meanwhile, those aged between 31 to 45 years lean towards strategy games.
Key growth drivers for this industry include an increase in smartphone ownership to over 820 million units, driven by affordability and advancements in technology such as increased phone memory and lower data costs. The report also anticipates that India's online gaming industry will generate an additional 2.5 lakh jobs over the next decade, supplementing the current workforce estimated at around 1 lakh skilled professionals.
Another factor contributing to India's attractiveness as a gaming hub is cost efficiency. Game development costs in India are estimated to be up to 50-60 per cent lower than those in Western countries. This cost advantage positions India as an appealing destination for outsourcing game development tasks.
The demand for talent within the Indian gaming sector is surging, with job openings ranging from developers and programmers to testers, artists, and customer support roles. This demand underscores the sector's rapid expansion and its increasing contribution to India's digital economy.
With government recognition of esports and various state-led initiatives aimed at nurturing talent, the number of professional players in India is expected to grow by 2.5 times over the next five years from its current base of 500 in 2023. This growth trajectory highlights not only the economic potential but also the evolving cultural landscape surrounding gaming in India.
