India to Develop Its Own Mobile Phone Brand: Vaishnaw

The Indian government is actively working on developing an indigenous mobile phone brand, drawing inspiration from the country's successful journey in large-scale mobile manufacturing. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this ambitious plan during the launch event of the Indus App store by PhonePe, held on Wednesday.

Semiconductor Plants Approvals on the Horizon

In a significant boost to the country's technology sector, Vaishnaw announced that the government is poised to approve 2-3 semiconductor plants in the near future. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's long-term roadmap for developing a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India over a 20-year period.

Building a Comprehensive Handset Ecosystem

Vaishnaw emphasized the government's commitment to fostering a comprehensive handset ecosystem within the country. Leveraging the valuable lessons learned from the success of large-scale mobile manufacturing, the minister outlined plans to create an entire ecosystem that encompasses the design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging of mobile phones.

Indus Appstore: Empowering Indian Developers

During the event, Vaishnaw also launched the indigenously developed Indus Appstore, which has been acquired by PhonePe. This app store boasts over 2 lakh mobile apps and games across 45 categories, catering to users in 12 Indian languages. Unlike popular app stores like Google Playstore and Apple App store, Indus Appstore will not charge any commission on app earnings, providing a significant advantage to developers.

Open and Transparent Platform

PhonePe's CEO and Founder, Sameer Nigam, highlighted the company's commitment to an open and transparent platform. The Indus Appstore will allow developers to upload any app that complies with Indian laws, without any app listing fees until April 1, 2025. Additionally, the app store will provide clear reasons for any app removals, ensuring fairness and transparency.
