Indian-origin Ex-CEO Of Silicon Valley-Based HeadSpin Admits Guilt In Fraud Case

Manish Lachwani, an Indian-origin entrepreneur and the former CEO of HeadSpin, a Silicon Valley-based start-up, has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors in a $80 million (around Rs 654 crore). He established HeadSpin in 2015 and led it as CEO until May 2020, giving clients access to devices and testing software for mobile applications.

Lachwani was detained in August 2021 and accused of overstating the start-up's revenue and other important financial indicators in order to cheat investors out of USD 80 million.

HeadSpin received more than $100 million in funding from investors between April 2017 and April 2020, which resulted in a valuation of over USD 1.1 billion. Lachwani admitted, in his plea deal, that he misled and exaggerated sales metrics to prospective investors in order to entice investments into his business.

According to the news statement, Lachwani confirmed that he informed potential investors about the company's operations, clients, earnings, and finances while the company was raising capital.

Inflated annual recurring revenue figures and overstated revenue figures were also disclosed by him to the investors, which had an impact on their decision to participate in the startup.

The press statement states that the maximum penalties for the counts of wire fraud and securities fraud are 20 years in jail and fines of up to USD 250,000 and USD 5,000,000, respectively.

Lachwani may also be required to pay additional penalties as part of the sentence and to complete an additional period of supervised release following any prison time,.

According to a press release, Lachwani is currently free on bond. It said that US District Judge Breyer has set the hearing for Lachwani's punishment for September 27, 2023.

Lachwani gained notoriety before he helped start Headspin by creating the initial operating system for Amazon's Kindle device. According to cbslocal.com, he later contributed to the development of Appurify, a mobile testing platform that Google acquired in 2014.
