The Ministry of Railways in India has unveiled plans to eliminate waiting lists entirely within the next 4-5 years. The move comes in response to a significant shift in passenger preferences, with an overwhelming 95.3% choosing non-AC coaches such as General and Sleeper classes, according to sources revealed to The Economic Times.
Data from April to October 2023 highlights a staggering increase of 38 crore passengers in non-AC coaches compared to the previous year, totalling an impressive 372 crore passengers. Meanwhile, AC coaches accommodated 4.7% of the total passengers, showing a notable increase of 3.1 crore passengers from the previous year, amounting to 18.2 crore travellers.

The overall surge in passenger numbers, a remarkable 92.5% increase in non-AC passengers (general & sleeper class), has prompted the Ministry of Railways to take proactive measures. To meet the escalating demand, Indian Railways has significantly expanded its services, with 562 additional trains now operational daily across the IR network.
The expansion covers various categories, including mail/express trains, suburban trains, and passenger trains. The total number of trains running each day has reached 10,748, compared to pre-COVID days. This strategic approach not only addresses the current surge in demand but also lays the foundation for a future where waiting lists are eradicated, promising a smoother and more efficient travel experience for millions of passengers.
The Ministry's comprehensive plan aims to enhance the travel experience for the growing number of passengers opting for budget-friendly options, emphasizing a shifting trend towards more economical travel choices. As Indian Railways continues to evolve and adapt to changing passenger preferences, the vision of a waiting list-free future seems well within reach.
