Starting March 1, 2025, Indian Railways will enforce strict regulations for waiting list passengers, limiting travel to general coaches. Additionally, AI will be introduced for seat allocation, and nuclear power opportunities are being explored to enhance sustainability.
Starting from March 1, 2025, Indian Railways has put into effect a stringent rule targeting passengers who find themselves on the waiting list. This move is designed to alleviate the issue of excessive crowding in the reserved compartments, paving the way for a smoother and more pleasant journey for everyone involved. In a significant shift from the past, those who booked their tickets through offline channels and were placed on the waiting list were previously allowed to board the train with their waiting list tickets. This practice will no longer be permitted, as the new regulations strictly prohibit travelling in both sleeper and AC compartments under such circumstances. Instead, these passengers are now restricted to the general coaches only.

To ensure the observance of this new regulation, the Indian Railways has laid down severe penalties for anyone found in violation. Passengers caught in AC compartments with waiting list tickets will now face a penalty of up to Rs 440, in addition to being charged the fare from the train’s point of origin to the next station. Similarly, those in sleeper compartments under the same conditions will incur a fine of up to Rs 250, alongside the applicable fare till the next stop. This measure is part of a broader initiative to enhance the travel experience by mitigating overcrowding in the reserved sections of the train.
Advancements in Seat Allocation
In an effort to streamline the booking process and tackle the persistent issue of waiting lists, Indian Railways is turning to technology. The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in seat allocation marks a significant advancement towards a more efficient system. This AI-driven approach is anticipated to quicken the booking process and substantially reduce waiting list complications, ultimately elevating the overall passenger experience.
Exploring Nuclear Power Opportunities
Beyond improving passenger services, Indian Railways is also eyeing sustainable energy solutions. At the Madhya Pradesh Global Investor Summit 2025 (GIS-2025), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a compelling case for the establishment of nuclear power plants. He assured potential investors that Indian Railways would be keen on purchasing electricity generated from such sources. "I would like to request that if a nuclear power plant can be set up in Madhya Pradesh, Indian Railways would be very happy to enter into an agreement to purchase electricity from it. Wind power is also very interesting to us," Vaishnaw stated, highlighting the organization's interest in alternative energy.
The summit witnessed participation from an array of prominent industry leaders, signaling strong interest in the minister's proposal. Among those in attendance were Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group; Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group; and Nadir Godrej, Chairman and MD of Godrej Industries Limited, to name but a few. This gathering of business magnates underscores the potential collaborations that could emerge in pursuit of sustainable energy solutions for the railways.
In conclusion, these developments represent Indian Railways' concerted efforts to tackle existing challenges and futureproof its operations. By enforcing stricter rules for waiting list passengers, leveraging AI for seat allocation, and exploring sustainable energy sources, the organization is set on a path towards enhancing efficiency and sustainability in its services.
