Indian Stock Market Outlook Next Week: Sensex, Nifty May Stay Range-Bound as Crude Oil, Global Risks Rise
Indian stock market investors are likely to enter the week of August 17 to 21, 2026 with a cautious approach after benchmark indices snapped a two-week winning streak. Rising crude oil prices, renewed Middle East tensions and uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Iran standoff could keep global risk appetite under pressure, even as domestic earnings and key macroeconomic indicators continue to offer support to Indian equities.
Stock Market Outlook Next Week, 17 to 21 August 2026: Sensex, Nifty Weekly Prediction
The Sensex ended the previous week 0.62% lower at 78,009.25, while the Nifty 50 declined 0.83% to close at 24,366. The broader market performance was mixed, with the MidCap index gaining 0.50% on selective buying, while the SmallCap index fell 0.66% as investors booked profits in several high-beta stocks.

Crude Oil, Geopolitical Risks to Drive Market
The direction of the Indian stock market next week is expected to remain closely linked to movements in crude oil prices and developments around the Middle East and U.S.-Iran tensions. Any further escalation could increase uncertainty across global markets and weigh on risk-sensitive assets, including Indian equities.
Higher crude oil prices remain a particular concern for India because of the country's significant dependence on imported energy. A sustained increase in oil prices could add to inflationary pressures, widen the current account deficit and put additional pressure on the Indian rupee. A weaker rupee and elevated oil prices could, in turn, make foreign investors more cautious towards Indian equities.
Q1 Earnings Provide Support
Despite the external challenges, domestic fundamentals have remained relatively supportive. Better-than-expected corporate earnings, a stable rupee and moderation in domestic bond yields could provide a cushion to the market if global volatility remains contained.
Foreign institutional investor activity will also remain an important factor for the Sensex and Nifty during the week. Any improvement in overseas fund flows could support market sentiment, while renewed selling pressure could limit gains and keep the indices volatile.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, said markets stayed range-bound during the week as elevated crude and global uncertainty limited investor confidence. He noted that softer U.S. labour market data initially supported expectations of a patient Federal Reserve, but the rebound in oil prices shifted attention back to inflation risks.
Nifty Weekly Prediction, August 17-21, 2026: Check Technical Outlook
"On the domestic front, the Nifty 50's strong Q1FY27 earnings performance comfortably exceeded market expectations. Earnings breadth remained healthy, with 33 constituents outperforming estimates, underscoring the strength of corporate earnings despite a challenging external backdrop and continuing to create opportunities for a bottom-up stock selection approach," Nair said.
With the Nifty 50 ending the previous week at 24,366 after a 0.83% decline, traders are likely to closely monitor the 24,000-24,500 zone in the coming sessions. A sustained move above the recent closing levels could improve sentiment and open the door for further recovery, while weakness below key support levels could trigger additional profit booking.
The index may remain range-bound if investors continue to balance strong domestic earnings against elevated crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Volatility could also rise around major global economic data and central-bank signals.
For the Sensex and Nifty, the coming week could therefore remain a stock-specific and range-bound market, with investors likely to favour companies showing strong earnings visibility and resilient fundamentals while remaining selective in high-beta segments.
