India's 7 Upcoming Bullet Train Corridors: How Fast Could You Travel Across These Cities?
Recently, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans to develop seven new bullet train corridors connecting major cities such as Delhi, Varanasi, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. The proposed high-speed rail network, estimated to cost around Rs 16 lakh crore, aims to significantly reduce travel time between key urban centres and strengthen regional connectivity.

Currently, seven bullet train corridors have been included in the National Rail Plan. Of these, one project is under construction, three have received Detailed Project Report (DPR) approvals, and three are still in the survey stage. Here's a closer look at the upcoming bullet trainl corridors in India.
Delhi-Varanasi Bullet Train Corridor
The proposed Delhi-Varanasi bullet train corridor is expected to enhance connectivity between the national capital and major cities in Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, the journey between Delhi and Varanasi could be completed in just 3 hours and 50 minutes, compared to around 8 hours by the fastest Vande Bharat train currently operating on the route. The corridor is expected to improve access to important educational, industrial and religious centres.
Varanasi-Siliguri Bullet Train Corridor
The Varanasi-Siliguri bullet train corridor, planned via Patna, aims to strengthen connectivity between northern and northeastern India. The proposed route could reduce travel time to just 2 hours and 55 minutes, making long-distance travel significantly faster. Improved connectivity is also expected to boost tourism and support economic development in cities along the corridor.
Chennai-Bengaluru Bullet Train Corridor
Among the proposed routes, the Chennai-Bengaluru bullet train corridor is one of the most anticipated due to the strong economic and business links between the two cities. The high-speed train is expected to cover the distance in about 1 hour and 13 minutes, making rail travel nearly as fast as flying. The project could provide a convenient and efficient alternative for frequent travellers.
Hyderabad-Bengaluru Bullet Train Corridor
The Hyderabad-Bengaluru bullet train corridor is expected to reduce travel time between the two major technology hubs to around 2 hours. At present, the Vande Bharat Express is among the fastest rail options available on the route. The proposed corridor could improve passenger mobility and further strengthen economic and business ties between the cities.
Hyderabad-Chennai Bullet Train Corridor
The Hyderabad-Chennai bullet train corridor aims to improve connectivity between Telangana and Tamil Nadu by reducing travel time to approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes. The project is expected to facilitate faster movement of people and support trade, tourism and business activities between the two states.
Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train Corridor
A high-speed rail link between Mumbai, India's financial capital, and Pune, a major technology and manufacturing hub, could transform daily commuting and business travel. The proposed bullet train is expected to cut travel time to just 48 minutes.
Pune-Hyderabad Bullet Train Corridor
The Pune-Hyderabad bullet train corridor will connect two important economic centres and reduce travel time to approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes. Improved connectivity between the two cities could encourage investment and business growth across sectors such as information technology, manufacturing and services.
