IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns With Immediate Effect; Rahul Bhatia to Lead Airline Interim

IndiGo announced the resignation of CEO Pieter Elbers with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. Rahul Bhatia will oversee daily operations on an interim basis while the search for a successor proceeds within InterGlobe Aviation, amid a period of flight cancellations and regulatory attention.

IndiGo announced that CEO Pieter Elbers stepped down with immediate effect for personal reasons, shifting leadership at India’s largest airline only months after large-scale flight cancellations disrupted travel plans for tens of thousands of passengers and led to increased regulatory attention.

The airline stated that managing director Rahul Bhatia would run daily operations on an interim basis until a new chief executive is appointed, while the search for Elbers’s successor continues within IndiGo operator InterGlobe Aviation.

Rahul Bhatia is also the founder of InterGlobe Enterprises, which held a 35.69% share in InterGlobe Aviation as of December, giving Bhatia significant influence over IndiGo’s strategy while handling both the managing director role and temporary control of the airline’s management.

The leadership change followed a difficult period in early December, when IndiGo grounded around 4,500 flights in a few weeks, raising alarm over how fewer strong competitors in India’s fast-growing aviation sector can affect passengers when one major carrier experiences large operational disruption.

Officials said IndiGo’s network struggled after the airline did not update crew rosters quickly enough to satisfy tighter government rules on pilot fatigue, and the company later apologised to passengers who were stranded or delayed during the cancellations.

Before the resignation, Elbers had taken a visible public role, including appearing alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a global airlines meeting in New Delhi last year, where IndiGo acted as host airline for the annual event and showcased its growing international profile.
