IndiGo Faces Potential Aircraft Grounding As Pratt & Whitney Addresses Engine Issue

IndiGo, India's largest airline in terms of market share and fleet size, is bracing for the possible grounding of more aircraft in the fourth quarter of the current financial year. This unsettling news comes as Pratt & Whitney, the American aerospace manufacturer, addresses a concerning engine issue that has the potential to impact a significant number of IndiGo's planes.

Gaurav Negi, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of IndiGo, shared this disconcerting information during a post-results analyst call, stating, "We've received communication from Pratt & Whitney regarding the powder metal issue. As shop floor visits increase, things will become more clear, and this might lead to a high number of aircraft groundings. We will take mitigating measures and lease more aircraft." This revelation has raised concerns within the aviation industry and among passengers.

Earlier this year, Pratt & Whitney disclosed the presence of powder metal contamination in some of its engines, affecting around 600 to 700 engines. This contamination can lead to the cracking of certain engine components, potentially compromising the safety and reliability of the engines. To address this issue, Pratt & Whitney has been working on a service bulletin outlining a fleet management action plan, as directed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in September.

However, as Negi pointed out, the exact number of affected IndiGo aircraft remains uncertain, making it difficult to provide a precise figure at this time. Presently, approximately 40 aircraft are grounded due to the ongoing engine issue.

Despite these challenges, Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, sought to reassure stakeholders during the analyst call. He emphasized the airline's impressive financial performance, with a net profit of Rs 188.9 crore for the quarter ending in September 2023. This marks a remarkable turnaround compared to the net loss of Rs 1,583.33 crore during the same period in the previous year. Elbers further highlighted that 26.3 million passengers flew with IndiGo in the past quarter, and the company is on track to welcome 100 million passengers during the current financial year.

In addition to its domestic network expansion, IndiGo is focusing on enhancing its international strategy. The airline has added six new international destinations and plans to densify its network by introducing two more, including Bali and Medina. IndiGo aspires to reach 30% ASKs (Available Seat Kilometers) for international destinations in the coming years and is working to expand its codeshare agreement with Qantas, the Australian carrier.

Amid these challenges, IndiGo is actively taking mitigating measures to address the engine issue and minimize its impact on operations. Furthermore, IndiGo is looking forward to leasing more aircraft in the coming months, a strategy aimed at maintaining its impressive growth trajectory.
