IndiGo Collaborates with Garuda Aviation Academy for Pilot Training

IndiGo, a leading no-frills carrier, announced a significant partnership with Garuda Aviation Academy aimed at nurturing fresh talent in the aviation sector. This collaboration marks the airline's commitment to its Cadet Pilot Program, designed to train aspiring pilots for the role of junior first officers. The comprehensive 21-month course is structured to include a three-month ground schooling phase at Garuda Aviation Academy's training centre located in Gurugram. Following this, cadets will undergo 12 months of rigorous training at 43 Air School in South Africa, an institution renowned for its excellence in training over 6,000 ab-initio pilots.

IndiGos New Pilot Training Venture

Over the past 13 years, IndiGo has successfully forged eight such partnerships, through which it has welcomed over 1,000 pilots into its fold. These pilots have completed full training programmes that encompass both the commercial pilot licence and the A320 type rating. Captain Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President for flight operations at IndiGo, expressed confidence in the partnership with Garuda Aviation Academy. He highlighted that the 21-month course is meticulously designed to cultivate a new generation of skilled pilots committed to IndiGo's mission of safe, affordable, and hassle-free travel.

This initiative also aligns with the Indian government's UDAN mission, aimed at enhancing regional air connectivity. By focusing on connecting smaller and medium-sized towns and cities, IndiGo reinforces its dedication to broadening the aviation network across India. The demand for pilots in India is on an unprecedented rise, with domestic carriers including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa placing orders for 1,120 aircraft since February last year. IndiGo alone boasts an order book of nearly 1,000 planes.

According to CAPA data, India's commercial airlines are expected to nearly double their fleet size to 1,400 by the fiscal year 2029-30. To meet this expansion, the country will require at least 10,900 additional pilots by 2030, translating to about 1,600 new pilots annually. Captain Mittra further emphasized the importance of personal and professional growth for pilots within IndiGo. He stated that the partnership with Garuda Aviation Academy is set to offer unique learning opportunities and leadership development for IndiGo's pilots, ensuring a strong foundation of leadership within the airline.

As India's aviation sector continues to expand rapidly, initiatives such as these play a crucial role in addressing the growing demand for qualified pilots. Through strategic partnerships and comprehensive training programmes, IndiGo is not only contributing to the development of aviation talent but is also ensuring its commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction remains steadfast.
